Continue The Adventure With Season 2 Of When Calls The Heart!

The much-anticipated second season of the Hallmark Channel’s hit historical drama, When Calls the Heart, is here! Based on the beloved novels by Janette Oke (Love Comes Softly), When Calls the Heart follows Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a well-bred heiress who gives up her life of privilege (and social expectation) to teach school children in a frontier mining town. Filled with historical detail, danger, mystery, and romance, When Calls the Heart is an excellent story, that I’m happy to see finally translated well to the big screen.

I first read Elizabeth’s story when I was only 12 years old. Love Comes Softly was my first exposure to adult fiction, and as much as I enjoyed it, When Calls the Heart was my favorite series of the two. Over the years, a couple of attempts have been made at movies, but so far no one’s ever done the story justice (and honestly, it’s not that hard, so this has always irked me).

I have yet to see the first season of this new edition, but I was pleased to receive copies of the first three episodes of Season 2, and I loved it! The acting is well done with convincing characters, the writing is smooth and coherent, and the sets and details are impeccable (though I do find myself wondering if wardrobe really was that versatile back then, or if it’s creative license, on par with the gloriously shiny and perfectly coiffed locks sported by all the main women in the show). The overall feel of the show is very much Army Wives and Desperate Housewives meets Anne of Green Gables and Gone with the Wind. Kind of an odd pairing, but it works! I especially love Erin Krakow’s performance as Elizabeth Hatcher.

After watching only three episodes, lacking the context of the first season (and I barely remember the books, other than that I liked them), I’m ready to catch up on what’s gone before, and see the new episodes as they’re released. It’s a fun, sweet show that you’re sure to enjoy.
