Not every fairy tale is sugar coated. Older once upon a time ones were written for both adult and children audiences. So is the Wizart animation’s feature Snow Queen (PG, 80 minutes) released October 11, 2013. Its sequel due to be released next year is already in production.
Brief Plot Summary:
Evil Snow Queen threatens the world with destruction. When she learns from her magic mirror that master glass maker Vegard’s mirrors which reflect more than appearances, they also reflect souls, she sends her Polar Winds destroy the man and his family. Vegard and wife Uta perish. Their children Gerda and Kai escape to a bleak life in an orphanage. Orm the Troll beguiles Kai to run away to a better place with him. However, Kai’s sister and her pet ferret Luta follow. Along their adventurous journey they encounter
many dangers. Be on polar bear alert. A Flower Woman witch, a medieval king, roadside gypsies, highway robbers, and a rune throwing old crone prove Luta is a survivor. Of course, Luta saves Kai, the world, and even the Snow Queen.
Set in wintry Russia, this chilly adaptation of a Hans Christian Anderson story offers much–a girl role model, values like courage, honesty, loyalty, and even comic relief. The theme and moral of Snow Queen outweighs any minor animation and plot glitches. Snow Queen explains a cold world once upon a time.

With the popularity of Elsa from Disney's Frozen, I think lots of little girls will want to see The Snow Queen, too.
