A few years ago, when I worked out of the house, I worried my oldest would need to reach me.  What if I got stuck in traffic as he was getting off of the bus? I didn’t want a latchkey child. He was also of the age where some of his friends were getting phones, and he was developing an interest in having one himself. We had no interest in allowing our then 12 year old to be constantly on the phone at all hours. We also had no real interest in signing a contract for a phone that would only be used occasionally or on a limited basis. We researched every cell phone out there, looking for something that would not cost us a fortune and allowed us to set certain limits. After all, I’d heard from a friend about how their child ran up their monthly bill by over $90 because the child had used way too many minutes. A reasonably priced plan that didn’t require a contract and that offered parental controls didn’t exist at that time.

But I recently learned that such a thing does exist now. It’s called Zact. ZactMobile is a nationwide service that was recently awarded the seal of approval from The National Parenting Center. Their average monthly bill is only $22! Zact lets parents set up parental controls and customize a child’s plan, permitting things like text and data usage limits and usage curfews.
