I always feel extremely lucky to live in a city where amazing food exists – one such place is Oatmeals down in the West Village. Oatmeals opened in 2012 by Sam Stephens, this specialty “Oatmeal Bar” specializes in (you guessed it) oatmeal! Sam, whose passion for the classic breakfast food started during her budgeted college days, having a love for food started creating recipes that made a boring bowl of oats incredibly delicious. Sam, who I met at Oatmeals this past week, shared her story with me as well as the exciting partnership that Oatmeals has recently made with Quaker Oats!
Anyone can see that the partnership between Quaker Oats and Oatmeals could not have been more natural, a thought which I shared with Sam – and she couldn’t agree more. “I was so excited to work with Quaker, it really allowed me to push myself and experiment some more” she said happily. Oatmeals offers a plethora of delicious sounding flavors including everything from comforting stand-by’s like Brown Sugar & Raisin to savory oatmeals like The Canadian which includes cinnamon roasted apples, sharp cheddar cheese, bacon, maple syrup, and sea salt.
Eager to taste of few of Oatmeals exciting options I had a bowl of oatmeal drizzled with peanut butter and strawberry jam, topped off with diced apple. It was insanely good, really like a dessert – without feeling as heavy as one. After my first bite I pretty much abandoned my preconceived oatmeal notions, which was good because the second oatmeal I tried was completely off the charts.
Warm oatmeal topped off with cool Greek yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, sliced almonds, and chia seeds, framed by banana slices, and drizzled with honey – definitely the best bowl of oatmeal that I have ever had. The flavors were obviously delicious, but what really took me by surprise was the different textures – the warm creamy-ness of the oatmeal, sweetness of the banana, cool tartness of the Greek yogurt, firmness of the fruit, and crunch of the almonds. Loved it.
If you’re in NYC you should definitely stop by Oatmeals (and don’t leave without an oatmeal cookie either!), if you’re not then grab some Quaker Oatmeal – the great thing is that these tasty treats are accessible and you can make them at home!
