Coconut Dalgona
Have you tried dalgona yet? If you haven’t, you might have heard of it or seen photos of it on restaurant websites or social media. Dalgona is a visually striking whipped coffee beverage that looks like it comes right out of a fancy coffee shop or restaurant. You don’t need to go to a coffee shop for it though, you can make this beverage right at home.
What is dalgona? Dalgona is a Korean sponge candy. Dalgona coffee doesn’t contain any of it. Dalgona coffee is a combination of instant coffee, sugar and hot water that is mixed together and placed on top of a glass of milk. The combination of colors and textures makes for a visually appealing beverage.
The trick to making dalgona is making the foam. You can use an immersion blender or a hand mixer to create the dalgona’s foam, if you find that easier or more preferable than whisking by hand. If you’re going to be serving the beverage to a group of people or refrigerating the creamy foam then this will definitely save you some time and energy. I have had this hand blender for a couple of years now and love it, it’s helpful for recipes like this one because it includes a whisk.
Here’s how to make it.
This recipe makes 2 Servings
Equipment Needed
- whisk OR immersible blender
- very large measuring cup OR small pitcher OR mixing bowl
- measuring cup
- measuring spoon
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp of instant coffee
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp hot water
- Coconut Cream Coffee Mate
- milk of choice
- ice cubes
- coconut shavings

Instructions
Whisk together instant coffee, sweetener of choice, and hot water until peaks are formed. (You can use a hand whisk, a hand mixer or a stand mixer – whichever you have handy or simply prefer.)

Fill a glass with ice cubes and top with desired amount of Coconut Cream Coffee Mate. If you prefer a lighter, more subtle flavor then you should use about a teaspoon of creamer. If you prefer amore robust and intense flavor you could use an ounce of creamer.
Fill the rest of your cup with the milk of your choice.

Put one to three spoonfuls of the whipped coffee mixture on top.

Sprinkle the top of the whipped coffee with coconut shavings.
Serve and enjoy!

Common Questions
Do I have to use instant coffee to make this recipe?
Yes. Dalgona coffee cannot be made using regular brewed coffee beans or k-cups. The foamy topping that makes this drink unique is a direct result of the drying process of the instant coffee’s granules.
Can I refrigerate the foam?
Yes! If you really enjoy dalgona but want to minimize prep work you can actually refrigerate the creamy foam that goes on the top of the beverage.
