I’ve been pretty much confined to the couch since surgery. In addition to having been non-weightbearing for weeks, I’ve also been encouraged to keep my foot elevated. So I’ve been here on the couch. One of the things I’ve been doing to pass the time is play the Monopoly board game with my oldest son so let’s talk Monopoly!.

Monopoly is a favorite board game for both of us.

We play with three house rules.

#1 Double Cash On Go – If you land on the Go spot during play you collect $400 instead  of the usual $200. You do not get to collect double if you are sent to the Go spot.

#2 Free Parking – Anytime you have to pay a tax, fine or fee (so basically anything you have to pay except rent), that money goes into the middle of the board. Anyone that lands on the Free Parking spot gets to collect all of the money in the middle of that board.

#3 Negotiating – We’ve always played with the ability to negotiate. We can negotiate property trading. We can also negotiate if a person is short on cash.

My oldest loves to play Monopoly. When you play Monopoly with him you can bet your bottom dollar that he’s out to win. While he is competitive, he’s also just into the fun. So, while he will totally plot to have a monopoly on both sides of at least one corner of the board, he’s also willing to take a get out of jail free card if you’re short on cash and you land on his hotel.

I have many memories of playing Monopoly with him, more than I can even count. I know I laughed every time.

Recently Hasbro announced that they are releasing Monopoly Voice Banking, a cashless voice-activated version of the popular board game. I love Hasbro and Monopoly but reading the announcement made me a little sad.

Monopoly Voice Banking

This new version of the classic board game comes with no cash. That’s right, no cash. Mr Monopoly (the voice inside the top hat that sits in the center of the board) is the banker in this game, he controls all of the money and properties.

The game can be played by two to four people ages 8 and older, which is a change from the customary max number of players being six. Each player gets one of the four green tokens – T Rex, cat, dog and race car – and a reference card containing commands that can be given to Mr Monopoly. Each of the four players has a corresponding button on the top of the top hat. When a player takes their turn they do roll the dice and move their piece. Then if they want to buy, auction, pay rent, get a balance or collect money for passing go they have to tell Mr Monopoly. Mr Monopoly can also answer certain questions like “who’s winning?”.

A voice activated top hat banker and the lack of cash aren’t the only things you’ll have to adjust to in this new version. Some spaces are no longer there. Connective, Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, Atlantic, and Pacific Avenue are gone. Railroads are no longer for sale. Utilities are gone. There’s no Community Chest.

If I am interpreting the product description and articles I’ve read correctly, I believe that this new version means an end to house rules and negotiating. To me that’s a bummer.

I doubt I will purchase the new voice activated version, it just doesn’t speak to me. I’d rather spend my time and money picking up some of the fun variations of Monopoly. Have you ever played one of the Monopoly variations? Some are rather similar and others way different. Here’s a wish list containing the Monopoly variations that we’d love to have.

I love all the new themed Monopoly games but I’m with you; not sure how I feel about the cashless version. I think I’d rather stick with the old school version in that regard.

It’s a great game to learn strategies. Need a few hours to finish, but it could be one of the best times ever with family.
