ABOUT SIMPLY SWEET COLORCAKES

Ever since the Rainbow Cake went viral, people have gone crazy for sweets that surprise, and the biggest dessert trend these days is all about the wow factor. Whether rainbow-hued, tie-dyed, or featuring an unexpected pattern inside, the first cookbook from Simply Sweet, COLORCAKES: Wow-Worthy Desserts Anyone Can Make (April 8, 2014; Oxmoor House; $19.95/Paperback, available wherever books are sold), celebrates these fun and fantastic confections that can be easily made at home.

Featuring over 125 colorful cakes, cookies, ice cream treats, cupcakes and more, readers will find inspiration on every page of COLORCAKES. With a photo for every recipe, there are cute and clever treats perfect for every occasion from snack-time to party-time. The cookbook guides bakers through every step with “Simply Smart” secrets for making the recipes even easier and “Color Wow!” tips on how to take your treat to the next level, as well as how-tos for creating eye-popping designs and cutouts for your creations. Best of all, most of the recipes can be made in under an hour and some in just 15 minutes! Whether you have an afternoon or a few minutes to whip up something, there’s a show-stopping dessert for you.

Start with an array of “Sweets on a Stick” that go beyond the cake pop. Bake up some Mini Glazed Doughnuts on a Stick, Key Lime Pie Pops shaped like slices of lime, Soft-Serve Cake Pops presented in an ice cream cone, or Chocolate-Dipped Cherry Marshmallows for a hand-held treat. Everyone will go “Crazy for Cupcakes” when you put out a tray of super-colorful Tie-Dyed Cupcakes, adorable Flowerpot Cupcakes, patriotic Red, White, and Blue Swirl Cupcakes, or the over-the-top Shark Frenzy Cupcakes.

Cakes are the star of the show with stunning recipes in the “Layer by Layer” chapter. It’s easy to make an impressive Orange Ombre Cake and Polka Dot Cake—which feature a surprise inside— as well as the six-layer Rainbow Layer Cake, Patriotic Checkerboard Cake complete with fondant stars on top, and the Present Cake that is baked to look like a bright yellow and pink present, tied with a big red candy ribbon.

Stick your hand in the “Cookie Jar” and impress the crowd with Birthday Cake Cookies shaped like three-tiered cakes, and Blue Velvet Pinwheel Cookies, or “Brilliant Bars” such as Red Velvet Brownies and Pistachio Cream Bars. Finish off with some delightful “Cool Treats” like Sunset Ice Pops or a Strawberry Semifreddo Shortcake.

From towering layer cakes to beautiful and imaginative cupcake displays, there are creative ideas on every page of COLORCAKES just waiting for their grand reveal at your next celebration. You’ll have everyone asking, “How did you make that?”

Chapters include:

  • Sweets on a Stick
  • Crazy for Cupcakes
  • Layer by Layer
  • Cookie Jar
  • Brilliant Bars
  • Cool Treats

The desserts in this cookbook are all so pretty! I generally like it when each chapter includes a listing of the recipes it has. I didn’t mind there being no chapter indexes when it came to this cookbook. The photos are just that amazing to look at.

Recipes are all really easy to understand. Each one contains simple and detailed instructions. I love that all of the recipes include prep and cooking time, something I find so helpful for using in determining what recipe it is I’m going to try. Every recipe also includes a gorgeous color photo. Some of the recipes also include tips on how to change the colors if you want.

I can make a dessert but I can’t decorate very well at all. These scrumptious looking treats are all colorful and very impressive. Take a look at these Bunnie Cookie Cups.

Bunny Cookie Cups

They’re actually fairly easy to make. Here’s the recipe, courtesy of the publisher.

There are many recipes in here that I want to try, most notably Polka Dot Cake, Cheery Chocolate Candy Bars, Polka Dot Cheesecake Brownies, Orange Cream Swirl Bars and Strawberry Semifreddo Shortcake.

This cookbook would be perfect for anyone that enjoys baking, as well as people who enjoy entertaining and putting out a nice looking spread.

How are you at decorating desserts? Have you mastered decorating and icing things, or do you struggle with it? Please leave a comment, I’d really like to know!
