Wreck This Journal was created for spontaneity, creativity, and fun. There are literally no limits as to what you can do with the journal, so for those who find it difficult to keep a plain writing journal as a creative outlet, this journal might be what you have been searching for.
Wreck This Journal was first published in 2007 and since then, Keri Smith has added new expanded editions with different choices of covers. Smith has also added other creative products to her line, such as Finish This Book, The Guerilla Art Kit, and How To Be An Explorer of the World. There is even an app for Android and iOS called Wreck This App that allows its user to get creative with the phone app just as you would the journal (warning: it’s addicting!)
I received a copy of Wreck This Journal for review. After first glancing through the pages, I admit I thought some of the instructions were a bit odd. Why, exactly, would I want to use vegetables as an ink stamp and stamp them all over my journal? Or compost a page and watch it deteriorate? However, once I looked through the whole journal, I realized how creative I could get with this and how much more fun it can be than a traditional written journal. There are even pages that tell you to drop the journal from a high place, swing the book wildly at the walls, and tear out a page and crumple it up – sounds great for letting out some frustration once in awhile! My 7-year-old will also get a kick out completing some of the journal with me: eating colorful candy and licking the page to create a tongue painting or splattering and smearing her dinner food all over a page sounds right up her alley.
While this might not be the journal for serious writers, it certainly is the perfect journal for creators. Some pages are silly, some are crazy, and some force the creative artist out of you. All in all, it is a unique journal that is sure to keep me entertained for awhile.
