Need For Speed Movie Review #NFSMovie

It’s no secret that I love cars. I also love some of the car movies. (I could all of the Fast and Furious movies as faves except for Tokyo Drift.) When I heard that those nice folks over at Dreamworks were making a car movie, I wondered if it would be, well, be a bit blah. Don’t get me wrong. Some of the DreamWorks movies have been my favorite. Meet The Parents is one of my all time favorite movies. I loved Shrek, Madagascar and Chicken Run. But how would they do with a movie about cars and racing, that was the question. The answer in short is, they knocked it out of the park. Need for Speed was awesome, and is definitely a movie I will watch again. And probably again and again after that.

Need for Speed is a movie based on a racing video game that I’ve heard of but never played. The main character is Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul). Marshall is a young, working-class mechanic. He has his own shop that’s been in his family, where he rebuilds cars. He also races in unsanctioned street races for money. In order to try and save the garage, Marshall agrees to build a car for famous driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). The car is so impressive that it’s sold almost immediately to the lovely female car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots). Unfortunately, there is a horrific accident and one of Marshall’s employees and friends dies in the crash. The crash was caused by Dino, but Dino frames Marshall and Marshall goes to prison for two years.

Fast forward two years, to present day, Marshall is out of prison and dead set on revenge against Dino. The only way to do this is to beat him in a famous secretive invite-only race called De Leon. In a matter of days Marshall must wrangle an invite out of the mysterious Monarch (Michael Keaton), the rich man who organizes the De Leon and chooses who participates. He gets his invite with under 48 hours until the race, and has to literally race across the country to make it to the race in time. The race across the country is intense, as some of Marshall’s team is no longer able to help, and because once Dino learns Marshall will be at De Leon he puts a bounty out on him.

Marshall does make it to the West coast just in time for check in of the race. I don’t want to give too many spoilers, so I’m going to say that things get really crazy after he checks in, people are hurt and he’s left without a car to race. He does get a car to take to the race – an unexpected car from an unexpected source. He gets to the race just as they are about to start, and the race begins. The race is action packed and full of awesome footage. I can’t tell you much more without giving away good stuff, so you’re just going to have to watch it for yourself.

The cars and special effects in this movie are great. I found no slow points in it at all, it just kept driving forward. I absolutely LOVE the Mustang. (If you’ve read me for a while you know I love Mustangs.) This movie would be great for folks who enjoy movies with lots of action and fast cars along with a great adversarial battle. “Need for Speed” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by Patrick O’Brien, John Gatins and Mark Sourian, and directed by Scott Waugh. The screenplay is by George Gatins. The film took the green flag and opened in theaters two days ago on March 14, 2014.
