Can you believe that Hostess CupCakes has been America’s Favorite Cupcake for 90 years? That’s right, it’s the 90th birthday of the moist little vanilla crème filled chocolate cupcake with the squiggle on top, the best selling snack cakes in history. The very first Hostess CupCake was baked in 1919. Obviously it was a hit because it’s still around today. It didn’t look or taste the same back then. The Hostess Cupcake as we know it today didn’t come to be until 1950 when baking executive D.R. “Doc” Rice added the squiggles and vanilla crème filling.
I was amazed to learn that Americans eat more than 600 million of these cupcakes every year. That’s a LOT of cupcakes. Want to know who’s eating them all? Residents of Memphis, Tennessee eat the most Hostess Cupcakes per capita of any city across the country followed by St. Louis, Cincinnati, Las Vegas and Louisville.

I wonder how the recipe changed with time.
