Laundry Tips To Help You Get Ready For The Holidays

The holidays are approaching rapidly. It’s all down hill from here in just a matter of days. Thanksgiving. Christmas. New Years. And all of the entertaining and guests that accompany them. No matter if we’re entertaining guests by hosting a dinner party or hosting relatives for a holiday visit, when we are expecting people we get the house looking just so. This can require a good amount of laundry, every piece of which I do in my Speed Queen washer and dryer.

When we’re getting ready to have guests, we change bed linens, towels, tablecloths, curtains and more. If you’re having overnight guests, chances are good you’ll be concerned about making that guest room fresh, so let’s start there.

In bedrooms, you’re going to be doing one of two things – cleaning it and using that one again or putting something new in there. Strip all bedding and other linens you need to wash. If you have a big washer like I do you can wash things like comforters right in the comfort of your own home. Focus on that room and only that room. If you are reusing the same bedding and linens, while they’re washing and drying give the room a quick clean. Then, once the wash is finished, put it back out for use in the room. If you are not using the bedding again, fold it when it comes out of the dryer. Store the sheets inside the pillow case. This keeps pieces together and easy to find in the linen closet. Put clean comforters and bed spreads in a zippered bag to help protect them and conserve space in the closet, adding some lavender for scent and to prevent moths.

Speaking of the linen closet. Get in there and take an hour or two to organize it. You know how things get a little out of hand in there. That can’t be just me. Right? It’s a fact you will use more towels and other linens while you have guests. More people showering and drying off, more people washing their hands, more people washing things. By organizing the linen closet you’ll be able to quickly find what you need when you need it,rather than standing there feeling foolish because you can’t find the hand towels and your guests are dripping on the clean bathroom floor.

Speaking of the bathroom. Many people like to change up their towels and bathroom rugs with the seasons or during the holidays. Once you’ve finished with a set, wash them and fold them up. Then, store the whole set in old zippered comforter bags. You know, the ones you can never get the comforters back into once you take them out. Put some lavender in there to help prevent moths and keep them smelling fresh when not in use. They’ll be clean and ready to use next time you want them.

Speaking of clean. The cheapest detergent is often not the most effective. Some people think they are saving money by using cheap detergent. If you have to use more than recommended, or have to wash things more than once, chances are good you aren’t saving much money if any. Money that can be better spent on anything, not just bills but also things like gifts, entertaining and food.

Speaking of food. Many people use a special tablecloth for the holiday, and maybe even some special placemats or napkins. These can be some of the toughest items to get and keep clean. Clean table linens starts the moment you remove them from the table. If anything is stained, treat it immediately. Then, wash and dry your table linens according to their care label. Then, fold and store it all inside a zippered bag with some lavender.
