Aquaponics Garden – A Fun Way To Learn At Home

I remember learning about plants and energy and such when I was younger. That’s not to say that I remember much of what I learned. Over the summer I took a Principles of Biology course over at the college, because I needed a science course for the degree I’m going for. We watched a lot of videos and did some hands on experiments too, something we hadn’t done much of when I was young. Thanks to technology advancements, it’s possible for people to do different things today then was possible when I was a child. Aquaponics, for example. When I was a child that wasn’t even a word. Today it’s a recognizable word and even something you can experiment with at home with a product called the Aquaponics Garden. Our main focus was taking the simple, ancient science of aquaponics and bringing it into the kitchen so that kids and adults alike can learn about how plants grow, where our food comes, and the natural cycle of plant fertilization. The fish waste fertilizes the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish. Fish waste is a natural, rich fertilizer that is great for growing food, and a really neat scientific process! We wanted kids to have fun learning where food comes from and about how to sustainably grow it themselves.

So What’s Happening Inside?

The fish, they poo and they pee, and all that waste-water gets broken down by beneficial bacteria into nutrients
The waste-water from the fish is then pumped up & upcycled as an awesome organic fertilizer for the plants. The plants take up the nutrients and, at the same time, clean the water which then falls back down for the fish.
There is no soil – the plants are growing just on rocks – all the nutrients coming from the fish (no need for any artificial fertilizers – it’s all organic!!)
There is no need to clean the water because of the plants – it’s a self-cleaning fish tank!

What Can I Grow?

Choose from a variety of fresh produce, including spinach, baby greens, oregano, beans, basil, mint, parsley & thyme.

All You Have to Do is Feed Your Fish

You can pick from a ton of different types of fish that will work great in the system – including our favorite, the Betta fish we have pictured in our system!
