I am a cat lover. I have always had at least one cat, going back as far as I remember. I love my cats and am very close with them. I try to take the best care of them that I can, their food being an important part of their care. That’s why I was very interested to learn about a study the folks at 9Lives recently did on feline nutrition. Here’s a summary.

A survey of feline pet parents across the country commissioned by 9Lives found that an overwhelming 94 percent of cat owners are confident they feed their felines the most nutritious meals possible. However, nearly half (48 percent) admit they’ve fed their cats table scraps – which do not provide the essential nutrients cats need – an average seven times per month. Additionally, only 30 percent know that giving your cat milk may not be a healthy practice due to the common incidence of lactose intolerance in adult cats.

Additional findings include:
23% of American pet parents think it´s beneficial to keep their cats on a purely vegetarian diet, while actually it may be harmful

There are a number of foods that feline parents assume are healthy for cats, but are actually not advantageous to their health including root vegetables (73%), green tomatoes (54%), and raw potatoes (50%)

Nine out of ten feline pet parents would be willing to switch foods if they knew it would provide better nutrition. In fact:

92 percent of cat owners would switch foods if it would improve their cat´s health, and
91 percent would switch food if they could add years onto their feline´s life

I can honestly say that while I don’t believe in giving animals table scraps, I am guilty of letting Romeo have cheese at times. I did know about the milk, but had never really thought about the cheese as it relates to milk. I never really thought about the vegetables, but have noticed more vegetables in cat food now then previously. I am definitely a member of the majority that would switch foods if it would help my cat be healthier and live longer. We received a sample bag of 9Lives Daily Essentials. Romeo already ate 9Lives and I already feel good about the brand name so I was fine with letting him try it. He can be picky – he won’t eat canned food and he won’t eat all brands of dry food – so I did wonder what he’d think. He ate it with no problem and seemed to enjoy it. Juliet is still mostly eating canned food but we caught her trying to munch on the dry food too.

Hi and Happy Halloween! 🙂 Well, Kitty gets only Fancy Feast canned food, but when it comes to dry food or treats, anything goes. Would I switch… well, when it comes to the canned food, she’s pretty finicky; however, with dried food, sure, she won’t mind! 🙂

I gave away a huge bag of a store brand cat food b/c he would rather starve and whine about it than eat it. After reading your review, I would switch for health. Thank you
