8 Tips To Organize Your Home

One of the best skills anyone can learn is the skill to get things organized and keep them organized. Sometimes the idea of organization can scare someone so much that they don’t even try. But, if you take the time to organize your home and life, the truth is everything will go much smoother. Here are eight tips to get your home organized.

Some of the posts on this site, like this one, contain an affiliate link. Affiliate links are used in an attempt to offset the operational costs incurred by running this website. Affiliate links may take the form of a banner ad or a text link. Clicking on an affiliate link does not increase the cost of the product for you if you buy it. It does mean that I MAY make a SMALL commission if you purchase the item.

Everything Has a Home

Let’s talk home organization. If everything has a home it makes it harder for something to be out of place. Don’t leave things out on a table to be put away tomorrow, put things away right away.

Store Shoes Away

We all wear shoes. Don’t let shoes be tossed anywhere throughout the house. Store shoes on a freestanding shoe rack in a centrally located place or in different rooms. If you don’t have room for a freestanding shoe rack, consider an over the door shoe rack that hangs over the top of a door or a hanging shoe rack that hangs in a closet. If none of those are an option, get an under the bed shoe box.

Clean as You Go

Whenever you do anything, clean as you go instead of leaving things out. Clutter is the number one reason a home looks dirty; not actual dirt.

Use Furniture

Wicker baskets are a great way to collect smaller things like remote control units. For lager items try using furniture with built in storage features such as bookcase storage pieces, cube organizers or perhaps a storage ottoman. For out of sight places like closets and basements you can use storage crates. A toy organizer shelf works well in kids’ rooms. You can find all of these items online and in stores, and used ones in thrift stores and yard sales.

Make Your Bed Right Away

Making your bed as soon as you get out of it helps you get the day started right. A neat bed immediately transforms your room, leaving you feeling productive.

Keep a Running List

Put a magnetic notepad on your fridge. When you are running low on something, write it down on the list. You can use a plain list or even a magnetic meal planner pad. Take the list with you each time you go to the store so you won’t forget things. If you have other members of the family getting organized you could consider using a magnetic dry erase calendar or a magnetic whiteboard instead of lists. If you go the magnetic route instead of paper just take a picture of the board when heading to the store.

Create a Filing System

Deal with paper only once. When you get mail, don’t leave it in piles here and there. Open mail and handle it immediately, throwing away what you don’t need and filing the rest away.

Keep Bills Organized

Get an accordion organizer, slotted organizer or desktop mail organizer; put the bills in there in the order you need to pay them. Alternatively, pay them via your bank online. Usually this is called “Bill Pay” or something similar. You can schedule payments the moment you get the bill, and then file the bill away.

Creating a system of home organization might feel strange at first, but after just a few weeks it will become second nature. You’ll be able to get more done because you’re not spending your time finding missing paperwork or putting things away that shouldn’t have been left out.
