I grew up very socially and culturally isolated; the 90’s are basically a huge black hole for me, missing out on all the iconic television shows and most of the movies, and all of the pop culture. Some of it may have been worth missing, but the older I get, the more things I discover worth enjoying from the missing decade of my childhood.
I discovered the original Hercules television series when I was 15 or 16 at a friends house, and loved it, though honestly, Xena: Warrior Princess was more my speed. There was just something really fun about a bunch of demigods running around in the forest, killing overly-silly monsters, and generally taking themselves way too seriously (and sometimes, not seriously enough). I didn’t watch very many episodes of either show, and until recently I had no idea that there was a prequel.
For the first time ever on DVD since its release on television in 1998 and 1999, the early years of mythology’s mightiest man are revealed in young Hercules: The Complete Series! This DVD collection includes all 50 episodes of the action adventure series in a 6-disc set as well as the bonus feature Writing The Legend Of Young Hercules, and is a must have for fans of this classic fantasy epic.

While Young Hercules was entertaining, and it was very trippy (in a good way) to see a young Ryan Gosling in action, I personally prefer the original Hercules and the Xena spin off to this prequel series. That said, any fans of teenage dramas, bizarre yet oddly lovable special effects puppet monsters, and Greeks who look absolutely nothing like Greeks, this is a fun series and worth a watch.
