I love mayo. It’s my favorite condiment and the only one I put on a sandwich. Hellmann’s, my favorite mayo for forever, invited me to the Breville Ultimate Sandwich Showdown in New York City last weekend. What a great time this was. The Ultimate Sandwich Showdown is a contest between a group of restaurants, each one offering a unique sandwich in an attempt to win a cash prize. The contest was presented by Hellmann’s, of course. Tyler Florence was on hand to announce the winner and sign some books.

The first thing I saw when I got there was a Hellmann’s stand where they were making custom sandwiches.

You got to pick what kind of sandwich you wanted and then had the ability to customize your mayo. I’d never thought of customizing my mayo. Hellmann’s is perfect just the way it is and I’m not just saying that because they had a car pick me up and take me to New York City. It’s true. A simple combination of eggs, oil and vinegar (the only things in Hellmann’s) on your bread and you’ve got a perfect sandwich.

Anyway. I was curious so I requested my roast beef and cheddar with Creamy Caesar spread, which is Hellmann’s, parmesan cheese, lemon juice and garlic powder. I picked up my finished sandwich and had my picture taken. Check out my pig glasses!

Time to walk around and enjoy the sights and check out the contest entries.

Check out the coffee tables made from Hellmann’s jars!

Time to check out the contest entries.

Each person that attended the Ultimate Sandwich Showdown received a token upon entry. The token was to be used for voting. Folks were to go around and sample the entries. When you decided which you liked best you dropped your token into a giant Hellmann’s jar at that table.

I couldn’t believe how unique the sandwiches were. Take a look.

Truth time. I had a hard time voting. The problem was this. I could not vote for my favorite sandwich. Why? Because honest to goodness, it was my Hellmann’s sandwich. I’m a simple girl that likes simple things. My roast beef and cheddar on French bread with Creamy Caesar mayo rocked. So I had to vote for my second favorite – BaoHaus Dericious Cheesesteak. And no, it wasn’t just because of the way they spelled the name although that did make me chuckle. It was because their rolls were amazing, so soft and tasty – I never tasted anything like them before.

Wondering who won? Here’s Tyler Florence presenting the check to the winner, Blue Ribbon, for their Bone Marrow And Oxtail Marmalade Sandwich.

How exciting! My husband is a huge Hellmanns fan…just huge. I’m with you the Baohaus looks like the best for me but the fluffernutters sound good. What a great opportunity, sounded like a great day.

The Baohaus was yummy, I’d never had cheesesteak cooked in a wok before. Honestly all it needed was a little Hellmann’s on those yummy buns and it would have been perfect.

I’m so jealous that you met Tyler Florence!! This post made me SO hungry for a sandwich, too. I would have picked the same sandwich you did, I love roast turkey. Before I even read which sandwich you picked, I was thinking mmm, Hellman’s with parmesan and garlic powder sounds good – lol!

But ewwww, bone marrow and oxtail marmalade? No thanks! Oh, and one more thing – great photos of you!!!

That was part of the theme, a tag line that said the most fun you could have between two pieces of bread.

Hellmanns is the ONLY may in my house. I can’t believe they didn’t invite me – I’ve been a spokesperson forever. Looks like you had fun!

Yep, we’re a Hellmann’s house too. I have tried four other brands and they just weren’t as good.

What a blast … good for you for getting to attend and meeting Tyler Florence! I’d probably pick the one you did or the lobster roll. Yum! And I’d love the basil pesto mayo flavor.

Wow, that seems like such a fun time! How did you like the custom mayos? You’ve made me hungry now for a sandwich, lol. But I can’t decide what kind! 🙂

Reply
valmg October 20, 2010 - 7:21 pm

The custom mayo was great. I was a little nervous but the proportions were just right so nothing overpowered anything else. They should sell them in the store.

The Hellmann’s sandwiches all sound so good, don’t know how you chose! Not too sure about some of those other creations although the lobster rolls sound delish. My husband turned me on to Hellmann’s. Miracle Whip is NOT welcome in this house!!

The winner of the contest offered up a rather “Andrew Zimmern” style sandwich! But I’m sure it tasted better than how it sounded. LOL …it must’ve been awesome tasting in order to win in the competition though.

valmg November 18, 2010 - 6:06 pm

I didn’t taste that one, honestly I thought it sounded awful.
