There’s a thing going around Facebook right now where you’re supposed to find the number 1 song from the day you were born and write how it’s relevant to you today. Well, the number 1 song on the day I was born was “Wild Thing” by The Troggs. I did not know until today that the song was actually a cover, the original was done by Chip Taylor. I also didn’t know that it’s the only single on record to simultaneously reach #1 on the chart for two companies. I’m not familiar with many songs from the time I was born, after all I was just an infant. But interestingly enough, this song is actually a song that I know and like. As did a lot of other people, considering that Wild Thing is #257 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It’s one of those songs that whether they like it or not, many people recognize.
So how does is it relevant to me now. Here’s how. I’m not getting any younger. I’ve had to contemplate my own life, and by extension death, and didn’t like it. It scared the hell out of me. I don’t do New Years resolutions, I think they’re bull but that’s something for a whole other post. It’s now been six months since lung surgery. As far as the pain, it’s ever present, and it’s probably as good as it will ever be. I’m learning to live with it. I’m learning to make the most of the time I have, none of us know what will happen tomorrow. When I think about what I hope for after I’m gone, I’d like people to know I was here and that I actually made some valuable contributions. I love blogging and social media, but I haven’t really been sharing much about myself lately. I miss that and have decided to share more about myself, so that this is more enjoyable for all of us. The point is, in the scheme of things, I’d be very happy to just make it onto life’s imaginary list, the one where people do remember something about you, how you did things, what you accomplished, etc. I do have things that I want to say and do, both personally and professionally. And it’s time to get to them.
So. As the great Jackie Gleason said – “and away we go”. I hope you’ll stick around.
