in the past year or two we’ve heard more and more about the use of technology in our homes. Capabilities have increased so much that there’s a term for this use now – smart homes. Through the power of technology we can now interact with doors, lights, appliances, and much more – all right from our cell phone. Cheryl sent me her thoughts on how having a smart home has the capability of improving peace of mind, which I am sharing with you with permission.
How A Smart Home Can Improve Your Peace of Mind
Having a smart home is an appealing idea; being able to control things in your home with a tap on your smart phone or simply by saying out loud is something out of a science fiction movie. But you may think of it as something that is only a luxury, rather than an investment in your life. While it may technically be something you could do without, having a smart home can definitely improve the security and peace of mind you have. All of this by keeping you connected from your smart phone to your home through various wireless internet providers.
Having a smart home is more than just being able to lie down in your bed and being able to turn the lights off with a spoken command. A smart home can save you money and reduce your carbon footprint. It does this by monitoring how much water you’re using as well as keeping your electricity use and heating and cooling costs down. But the best thing that a smart home can do for you is keep you safe and make sure your home and belongings stay safe as well.
Staying Safe the Smart Home Way
According to a local CBS news report, the best way to make your home safe from burglars is by making it as unappealing as possible. One key way to do this is by making your home always look occupied. Of course, there are low-tech ways to do this. Timers allow you to make sure that your lights go on at specific times. But these are static fixes, meaning that they don’t respond to anything. That’s where a smart home is different.
Your smart home connects you to everything that you have set up in your home. This can be your curtains, the lights, or your media center. So if you go on vacation or travel for a holiday, you aren’t stuck with lights that turn on at 7pm every day. You can set up different timers, so that your home turns off lights and turns others on, making it look as if someone is moving from room to room. You can set up a nested command that if your home detects that the motion activated lights outside come on, your bedroom lights come on as well. Using smart commands, your home can truly interact with the world outside.
Other Ways to Stay Safe
Of course, you want to be safe when you’re home as well. With a smart home connected to wireless internet, you can let your home know that you’re arriving. With a press of a preset button, the lights inside will come on, making sure you don’t step into your home unable to see your surroundings. With a smart lock, there’s no more fumbling for your keys either. You can unlock your door with a simple passcode, making it easier and safer for you to get from your car to your home. And with the right smart lock, you can even unlock your door with your phone. No more lost keys or trying to hide a spare in a fake rock.
Smart homes are the way of the future. With advances in technology, we’re becoming more and more connected with our homes and surroundings. When you have great wireless internet, you can be sure that your home will always be responsive and keep you and your loved ones safe.
Have you ever thought about living in a smart home?
