While traveling in July I encountered what appeared to be a small ice cream store in Mystic, CT. Finding myself in the mood for an ice cream shake before heading to my hotel I stopped. They had a large selection of hard and soft ice cream.

I did want my shake, but I was also a little hungry and decided I wanted a quick bite to eat as well. As it turned out, they offer quite a bit more than ice cream. The Sea Swirl has become well known for their fried seafood, particularly the fried clams. They also offer many other items for land lubbers, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken.

Budget was, and is a concern. I worried that because I was in an area that tourists frequent the prices would be really high. After taking a look at their menu I felt that their prices weren’t outrageous at all, which is likely why the Sea Swirl was visited by Rachael Ray’s $40 A Day on the Food Network Channel.

I decided to get an order of mozzarella sticks, one of my favorite appetizers. Unlike some fast food places, my order was not ready immediately. They actually fried them while I was there. They were crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside, just the way I like them.

I ordered an ice cream shake with cookies and cream, one of my favorites. The shake tasted great and the consistency was nice and thick without being so thick it’s almost solid.

If in the area I’d definitely stop at The Sea Swirl again. The Sea Swirl does have a period of time where they are closed during the winter so be sure to check the calendar on their website before heading that way if you’re traveling during the winter.

That looks like a great find. Sometimes ice cream is exactly what you need when you are on a road trip.
