How To Save Money On Car Repairs

Are you one of those people that have trouble getting their cars repaired without draining their finances? We’ve all been there! As car owners it’s inevitable that we wind up with at least one repair that simply must be fixed. The problem is that without knowing some guidelines to choosing where to get your repair done you could wind up spending more than you can afford as well as more than is necessary. Here’s a few suggestions on how to save money on car repairs.

Be knowledgable

It never hurts to read a basic manual on car maintenance. It could help you undwrstand some of the more important car parts and more common repairs. It will also help you to differentiate between minor repairs you can do yourself and major repairs that should be done by a professional.

Do your homework

One of the greatest problems most motorists encounter is that they spend more on car repairs simply because they didn’t choose the right mechanic or repair service for their cars. Through research, you can identify the right mechanic and the right shop.

Take note of the things that need to be repaired

Before you go to your mechanic, it is best to have all the necessary repairs you are aware of listed on one piece of paper. In this way, you can tell your mechanic right way the things that need to be repaired. This will prevent unnecessary repairs or misunderstandings on the type of repairs that your car needs. Unnecessary repairs will only add up to your repair expenses. You could even use your cell phone to take brief videos of the problems as they occur, which would enable the mechanic to get a better understanding of what the problem is.

Shop and compare

It’s usually not advisable to go with the first shop you find. To get the best quotes on car repairs, try to shop around and compare prices. In this way, you can evaluate and compare prices enabling you to find the best quotes possible.

Get an estimate

Before you commit yourself to a particular repair job, it is best to get a written estimate. This will prevent unnecessary accumulation of extra charges and/or additional work being carried out that wasn’t, included on the estimate. Remember that not all job repairs were created equal and not all mechanics are honest.

Know what type of parts will be used

Certain car parts can be rebuilt. Know if the shop you choose is planning to rebuild your current parts or use new parts that they source. If the shop isn’t rebuilding your parts you could even keep them for yourself and have them repaired at a machine shop at a later time.

Find out if the work has a warranty

Some repair shops offer warranties on the parts and/or services that they offer. Know if the repair you are agreeing to has a warranty, so if it does fail within a certain time you don’twind up spending money a second time needlessly.

Get a second opinion

If you aren’t comfortable making or even discussing car repairs, it is best to ask someone you trust to accompany you and help you wade through the answers you’re given.

Inevitably, car repairs simply cannot be avoided. There are reputable mechanics and shops out there. Try to remember these pointers and you should be able to find one and spend less on your next car repair.

Gorgeous photos! Getting an estimate is SO important. Our car broke down in Vegas. It was the transmission and he said he'd "take care of us". $2700 later...

Excellent suggestions! My husband is in the auto repair industry, so his personal connections save us a lot on both maintenance and repairs. I still feel it is important to shop around and get at least two different opinions before making the plunge.

These are all great information to know. I never thought to do any of these until one of the places we normally took our car just started getting pricier. We ended up getting second opinions and found that our old place was lying to us and trying to get us to fix things that didn't need to be fixed. It's always good to do your homework and especially to get second opinions.
