I get up every day at 4 am and start work at 6 am. Two or three days a week there are two other women there with me. I think of us as an office version of “The Breakfast Club”. The three of us are very different in some ways but there are a couple of things we all have in common. Coffee is one of them. We all love it.

I love coffee, but I don’t like it black. I also don’t like it with sugar. That may sound odd because I’m overweight but I don’t add sugar to anything that I eat or drink. The fact that I don’t use sugar is the reason why I was glad to get a chance to review a new sweetener called Truvia. If I’m at home I make coffee from flavored beans and don’t need sweetener. If I’m at work we just use automatic drip coffee, which means I need to sweeten it. At work we use Splenda. Splenda’s not bad but I’ve always found it to be a little too sweet so I don’t use a full packet. Anyway. Our office has been out of Splenda for almost a month now. I brought in some flavored creamer and invited the breakfast club to help themselves but they didn’t seem to like it. The Truvia I agreed to review arrived and I decided to bring it to work and see what my fellow club member Minnie thought since she usually used Splenda as well.
Now before I get into our thoughts, let me tell you a little about Truvia. Truvia is a new zero calorie sweetener. Now that in itself is not particularly earth shattering news. Here’s what is. Truvia is a natural product. That’s right, it’s not artificial. Cargill spent the last five years perfecting the process of steeping the leaves of the stevia plant (a naturally sweet member of the chrysanthemum family native to Northeastern Paraguay) to obtain rebiana, the sweetest part of the leaf. One packet of Truvia is about as sweet as two teaspoons of sugar, and it’s certified Kosher and safe for diabetics.

Getting back to my thoughts. I thought it looked like one packet of Truvia contained more sweetener then one packet of Splenda did. When I opened the packet there was no chemical sweetness in the air like I usually smell when I open an artificial sweetener. Both Minnie and I thought it tasted smoother and more natural then Splenda, it didnt have that fake sweet taste.
Truvia is good for more then just coffee. I put a package of Truvia into a giant glass of unsweetened Minute Maid lemonade that I got at Arby’s and it tasted just like the sweetened version some restaurants carry. You can use it on fruit. You can also cook with it. There are some great recipes on the website, like cheesecake, as well as a Truvia-sugar conversion chart.

If you’re trying to cut back on the sugar or if you’re watching your weight, I recommend Truvia as a tasty and healthy alternative to artificial sweeteners. Truvia is available in cartons of 40, 80 and 120 packets and can be purchased at grocery stores nationwide as well as online.
Thanks to Mom Central for this sweet review opportunity!
