I like chocolate. Actually, my whole family likes chocolate. When I received an unexpected email inquiring if I wanted to sample some gourmet chocolates from a company called FireLilly I gladly accepted. FireLilly Gourmet Chocolates is a family owned boutique in Toledo, Ohio that offers only one product – handcrafted Truffle Cones.
From the website: “When you think of chocolate truffles, do you conjure up images of round chocolate covered centers? Try a different kind of truffle. The FireLilly Gourmet Chocolate Truffle Cone. Deep rich dense centers surrounded by rolled waffle cones and then hand dipped in the world’s finest imported covertures.”
A rather large box arrived a couple of days later.
The box was not all packaging, it was all chocolate. Whoo hoo! I received samples of five of the six flavors that FireLilly makes – Decadent Dark, Minty Mousse, Chocolate Milk, Dark Raspberry and Peanut Butter. The only flavor we did not receive a sample of was Almond.
The size of one Truffle Cone is approximately the size of the picture on the box. FireLilly Truffle Cones are available to purchase packaged in a number of ways – bags containing 20 individually wrapped cones, bags containing 4 cones, tiny colorful canisters containing 2 cones and a large one gallon apothecary jar containing 75 cones.
FireLilly Chocolates make more then your standard filled piece of chocolate. They are mini ice cream cones filled with Belgian chocolate truffle. The cones taste and look just like real ice cream waffle cones except they’re smaller. The crunch of the cone is an interesting combination with the rich, smooth truffle. They even had subtle scents. I thought the scent of the Dark Raspberry reminded me of the Jelly Ring Candy that my Mom used to eat. I thought the scent of Minty Mousse reminded me of Thin Mint cookies. I found FireLilly Truffle Cones to be delicious and unlike anything else I’ve ever eaten before.
Each member of my family that tried the FireLilly Truffle Cones enjoyed them as much as I did. My favorite flavor was the Decadent Dark. The mixture of the dark and the truffle inside the cone was absolutely delicious. My suggestion for future flavor possibilities is to have the ability for nuts to be optional. (I don’t like nuts, I had to pick them off.) My Mom’s favorite flavor was the Dark Raspberry. She thought they were tastier then regular chocolate and a lot neater to eat. Her suggestion for future flavor possibilities was a white chocolate topping, making it ideal for weddings. She’d also like to see some different nut options. My husband was hard pressed to pick a favorite flavor but finally decided on the Peanut Butter. His idea for a future flavor possibility was to take my Mom’s white to another level. He suggested being able to dye the white chocolate, making it ideal for baby showers or anything where you’d want to match a color or theme.
The only piece of constructive criticism I have for FireLilly is regarding their labeling. The packaging has a section marked allergy information that indicates the product contains nuts or trace amounts of nuts. That’s a good thing. But it isn’t enough. My son has Celiac disease, which means he has an allergy to gluten. Gluten hides behind the cover of many names and I am of the belief that all food manufacturers need to make it simple for the consumer by letting them know if a product has it or doesn’t. It wouldn’t take much more room, and probably wouldn’t change costs at all, to mention the word gluten or wheat.
FireLilly Truffle Cones are definitely not meant for gobbling down like a bag of Reese’s. These refined treats are definitely intended for savoring. They would make excellent favors for a shower, party or special occasion. They would also be perfect for a tea party or as cake decorations. A third possible use would be as a stocking stuffer. I recommend FireLilly Truffle Cones for anyone who’s planning or hosting a special occasion, or for anyone who’d like to treat themselves to something out of the ordinary.
