My middle younger brother asked me, hubby and the boys to go out to dinner after our older son’s basketball game last night. My brother suggested Applebee’s and we said ok. Now my son’s game ended shortly before 8 pm, and by the time we got to Applebee’s it was about 8:10. We walked into the restaurant to find a packed house. The host informed us that we’d be waiting about 20 minutes. Who goes out to eat on a Friday night without a reservation, particularly to a restaurant that serves alcohol? I was willing to leave right then because it was late and the kids were hungry, but decided to wait it out so we could spend time with my brother.
The waiting area was packed. It was too small to accommodate the waiting people, but I was fortunate enough to get the one free seat and held my youngest on one knee. Our party of 5 was called about 10 minutes later. It seems 1 or 2 of the larger parties before us had left. We were escorted to a large roomy booth in one of the corners of the restaurant and seated.Within about 3 minutes a waitress came over to take the order for our beverages, which were delivered to us less than 5 minutes later.
We’d now been seated for 10 minutes or less. A woman approached our table and introduced herself as the manager. She told us very quietly that they had a party of 8 that was very dissatisfied with their seating and politely asked us if we would be willing to move. She told us that there would be no charge for our entrees. I accepted the offer. I picked up my cup of coffee to move and she said we could leave our drinks and we’d be served new ones. With that we were on the move.
We were off of the platform into the lower area to a booth across from the bar. It was empty and clean, no sign of anyone having been in it. It was a booth that would hold 6 and no more. We sat and were served new beverages without having to reorder them. Our new waitress introduced herself and took our dinner order. I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup, which honestly I thought was ok but a touch on the weak side. My hubby and my sons had an appetizer while we were waiting for dinner to be served, which took about 15 minutes.
Dinner arrived hot and looking very tasty. We were served the correct meals, as we’d ordered them, despite the fact that we were no longer sitting in the same positions as when we’d ordered. My youngest son had chicken. My hubby had a three course special, with his meal being an angus bacon cheeseburger. My brother had steak. My older son and I both had chicken fried chicken. The chicken fried chicken was exceptional and the creamy country gravy was delicious. I’d requested my potatoes as loaded mashed so they had bacon, jack and cheddar cheeses and sour cream, and they were really yummy.
Hubby’s dinner included dessert but the rest of ours didn’t. Another waitress came around for the dessert order. I ordered a cheesecake shooter for myself and my youngest while my older son ordered a chocolate mousse shooter, which is also what hubby got. The tray of desserts came back out almost as soon as we’d given it. We all ate our desserts, and as we were finishing the first waitress came back out to serve us out desserts. She laughed when she saw someone else had already served us dessert, and said “oh well I guess you’ll just have to have two”. So we did.
At this point my brother, who eats out often, told me that there was a chance Applebees might not pay for the entrees because he’d seen an instance or two before where an employee had said they would and they didn’t. I told him I wasn’t worried, because I was still willing to pay for my meal because the inconvenience had been so minor. The waitress brought the check over and bent over to quietly tell me that they had comped us all of the entrees to show appreciation for our switching seats. I thanked her again and told her it wasn’t a problem. Our bill ended up being less than $35 and that was for my soup, 2 of the 6 desserts and all of the beverages including 3 bottles of beer. We were comped almost $60.
I recommend the food and the service at the Applebee’s in Brick, NJ. The food was delicious and served as it should be, hot and as ordered. It was really great that we were comped our entrees and showed a lot of class on the part of the management. I will definitely go back again in the future.
Applebee’s is a franchise that has locations across the United States (including Hawaii) and Canada. Pricing for a meal starts under $10 at the location near us.

There is nothing about Applebee's that makes me want to come back. Compared to its competition (Chilis, Fridays..) Applebee's doesn't have any distinguishing benefits. It has absolutely no points of differentiation. The restaurant seems to be stuck in it's original old ways. From the restaurant's atmosphere, to the quality and price of the food- Applebee's isn't cutting it. Even though it is the largest casual dining chain in America, Applebee's has always struggled to position themselves correctly. In fact, IHOP just purchased Applebee's International for $2.2 billion. Applebee's has since then launched a bold new brand campaign. This has included a new menu, logo, uniforms, and even tag-line. "Together is good" & "Get it together, baby!", have replaced Applebee's old "Eatin Good in the Neighborhood" theme. Not all Applebee's restaurants are owned by Applebee's International. However, IHOP plans to sell each restaurant as individual franchises. When an individual owns a business, the operation is totally different. Franchises are more financially at risk with the restaurants success compared to a corporate-owned location. Maybe this re-marketing strategy will finally get things moving again for Applebee's.
