ABOUT COOKING FOR YOUR GLUTEN-FREE TEEN
An estimated two million people worldwide live with an intolerance to gluten — a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. For foodloving teenagers and their parents, the challenges of a gluten-free diet can be a nightmare: No pasta, no pizza, no pastries.
Now, gluten-intolerant teens no longer have to go without their favorite tasty treats. Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen: Everyday Foods the Whole Family Will Love is an invaluable resource for parents who need to prepare meals with tons of flavor and no trace of gluten.
In Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen, a smooth transition to a gluten-free lifestyle is told from the perspective of a teenager living with a severe gluten allergy, her mother (chef and restaurateur Carlyn Berghoff), as well as a doctor specializing in treating celiac disease. Inside, readers will find:
• A recipe for homemade Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
• Family favorites like Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Glazed Baked Doughnuts, Pizza, and Barbecue Pulled Pork
• Adjustments for additional diet restrictions, like lactose intolerance and dairy allergies
• Helpful advice for situations like eating at restaurants, feeling singled out at parties, and adjusting
to a gluten-free lifestyle — all without missing out on favorite foodsWith Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen and its kitchen guidelines, personal advice, tips, and tricks, a gluten-free lifestyle for families is a little easier and a lot tastier. MY THOUGHTS
My son has Celiac disease so I’m always interested in checking out new gluten-free cookbooks and recipes. This cookbook is a welcome addition to my growing collection.
The book has two parts – Part 1 is The New Lifestyle, and Part II is The Cookbook. Part I deals with information on gluten, going gluten-free and Celiac disease. Sections in Part II The Cookbook include:
- The Best Place To Start
- Recipe Guidelines for Gluten-Free Cooking
- Lactose Intolerance, Dairy Allergies, and a Gluten-Free Diet
- Resources for Gluten-Free Products
- Chapter 1 – Breakfast and Bread
- Chapter 2 – Starters and Snacks
- Chapter 3 – Soups, Salads and Sandwiches
- Chapter 4 – Main Dishes
- Chapter 5 – Side Dishes
- Chapter 6 – Desserts
Each chapter of recipes includes an index. The recipes are all easy to understand. Most of the ingredients are ones that you will find in your grocery store. If not you could also go to a local specialty store or health food store, or online. Recipes include some background information about each one, and many of the recipes also contain variations. Not every recipe has a photo but there are many colorful, appetizing looking photos through out the book. Some of the recipes that I’m looking forward to making for my son include most of the breads, Spaghetti Pie, Pizza, Macaroni and Cheese, Baked Stuffing, and most of the desserts. So basically the whole cookbook, LOL. This cookbook would be great for anyone looking to expand their gluten-free recipe collection, and would also make a great gift for someone receiving a diagnosis of Celiac disease.

Proper diet a must--too bad that choosing the correct ingredients is so costly compared with tradition foods.
