I’ve been living in the same house for over 20 years now. Over that time, needs and tastes have changed. We have not had the opportunity to make any major changes, but I sure do have a laundry list of dream projects. Emily shared some of the biggest reasons people may remodel, which I am sharing with you with permission.
Common Reasons To Tackle a Remodeling Project
From expansions in the family to the need to increase property value, there are a ton of reasons homeowners decide to remodel or renovate their homes. When deciding to renovate, you should make sure that the choices you make are targeted investments that can benefit you in the long run. Not sure you’re ready to remodel? Let’s take a look at some of the more common reasons people decide to transform their homes:
- It’s Affordable. If there was ever a time to have your home renovated, now would be the time. There are plenty of contractors that are more accessible and more affordable than in times past. You could essentially get a good deal on a remodeling project that you’ve been delaying for years.
- Your Family’s Getting Bigger. A growing family is another reason to consider a renovation. An expanding family does not have to be a baby on the horizon either. Maybe your parents are moving in or your children have simply outgrown the space they have to sleep and play in. A remodeling project such as a room addition would give you more space and functionality within the home.
- You’re Looking to Sell. Anyone trying to sell their home should know that this is certainly a buyer’s market. Adding attractive features like marble tiles to the bathroom floors or granite kitchen countertops can make the difference between your home sitting on the market for a while and getting an instant sale.
- It’s Time for a Change. If you’ve been living in your home for a while, you may just be tired of the scenery. Changing up the aesthetics of a home can be a great way to transform your space. Adding a fresh coat of paint, knocking down sheet rock to expose brick walls, or even installing new appliances around the house can make it feel like a nice living space all over again.
- You Need to Fix Some Things. Is your bathroom in need of a real overhaul? Maybe the tiles are damaged or the plumbing is beginning to clog. Whatever the case is, a home renovation project can be the best way to fix something while also sprucing things up a bit. A newly designed bathroom will repair the damage to the plumbing and improve the look of the floor tiles.
- You’re Going Green. Green living has become a lifestyle that more and more homeowners are looking to use. While it can be pretty costly to invest in, there are plenty of perks, including rebates, tax incentives, and the ability to save money over a longer period of time. Investing in energy-efficient appliances, installing new lighting, and even switching to a cleaner energy source are all great ways to go green in the home.
- The Kids Are Finally Gone. If you’ve gotten the kids off to college, you may want to revamp your home to suit your personal needs and interest. You may want to repurpose the kids’ rooms and turn one into a home office or mini gym.
- You Just Moved In. If you purchased a home that requires a little tender love and care, then renovating it is a great idea. Since you don’t have much furniture or personal belongings in the home, you can have the contractors come and complete larger projects without having to worry about moving things around. An improved kitchen complete with new cabinets, a nice deck, or even a finished basement can be great additions to a new home.
Did you find any reasons listed above compelling enough to renovate your home? Before you get started, you’ll want to make sure that you set a budget as well as locate a reputable remodeling company to assist you. While you may be able to complete small projects on your own, you want a professional’s touch on major renovations like the kitchen, bathroom, or room addition.

These are great reason to remodel, thanks for sharing. I am so in the mood to do some remodeling, if only I owned a home versus rented ;)

Yes... the project I am most proud of is that we refinished our own hardwood floors. We pulled up carpet... including all the nails, tacks and staples. Then we rented the sander and refinished them. It was a big project but we did it!

We're planning a couple smaller renovations this year. We did last year too, but never got around to it...
