We live in a pretty safe neighborhood. Nonetheless, no area is perfect and things happen. One of the things we put in shortly after moving in to our home was motion activated outdoor security lighting, the kind that comes on when someone on your property moves. back then, those alarms were pretty finicky. If the settings were too sensitive, the wind could make the lights come on. if they weren’t sensitive enough, nothing would happen when you walked nearby. We considered several options for the inside before making our final decision. I really wanted a motion detector alarm. The problem is, we’ve always had pets. Everything I read at the time, fifteen years ago mind you, suggested to me that our pets would likely activate the alarms. Back then we had a big dog, a Saint Bernard, and a couple of cats. basically someone or something was pretty much always moving in our house. so we didn’t go with the motion detector. When I saw the above infographic on the most common entry points for a break-in, I was surprised to find that the most common entry point is the front door. I wouldn’t have thought it, I mean how bold! As it turns out, it looks like the decisions we made were sound ones, then and now.
I am 45. Since moving out on my own at 18 I have never slept with my doors unlocked. It’s never even occurred to me. It just isn’t safe or sensible, in my opinion. Maybe in another time, or another place, but not as far back as I recall. Did you ever think it was safe to leave doors unlocked?

I always have lived behind locked doors. I just wonder if all the security lights, monitors, guards are worth it. I heard it was back screen doors left open for air....
