My Healthy

Almost 70 percent of Americans are affected by obesity or overweight. Many people find dieting as hard as giving up smoking. One of the best campaigns I have seen for quitting smoking focuses on the positive impacts your health receives according to a timeline. You may have seen it. Three months after you quit your body is doing this, six months after your body is doing this, so on and so forth. Well, Eisai Inc. has introduced a new campaign that seeks to do the same thing with weight loss called My Healthy.

I used to weight 374 pounds. The stress of dieting, whether it be coming from others or from within yourself, can be astounding. The constant desire to see your weight drop and continue to drop can be quite overwhelming. And, it can be very disappointing if you aren’t constantly losing or if you aren’t losing as much as you’d like. I see it all the time when I read people’s blog posts about their dieting progress. They beat themselves up because they didn’t lose anything that week, rather then celebrate the fact that they didn’t gain anything. The bottom line is, weight loss isn’t easy and it isn’t quick.

The first step in a weight loss program is to stop. Stop with the fad diets. They’re worthless. Stop with the cleansing. It won’t solve the problem. Stop thinking what your neighbor or Joe Blow down the street did will work for you. It might, and it might not. Weight loss, like good clothing, is not one size fits all. The next step in a weight loss program is to start. Start talking. Start by speaking with your family physician. This is important because obesity often has friends, and by friends I mean other health issues.  Things like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, the list goes on and on. Your doctor will determine important things like what your BMI is and what your ideal weight is. He’ll also look for any other issues you may have, which is very important information that is necessary to have to create a personalized weight loss program just for you.

Part of that personalized program can be taking the My Healthy Promise. The My Healthy™ Promise is a commitment to set realistic goals and recognize that, for those who are affected by obesity or overweight, every positive step counts. These steps include talking openly with your doctor about your weight and health, making healthier food choices, and being more active.

“When you make the My Healthy™ Promise, it all starts with your doctor. He or she can advise you on what may work best for you and create a tailored plan because there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to weight loss,” said Steven Lamm, MD, Director of Men’s Health at NYU Langone Medical Center. “Together you can determine the health milestones you want to achieve. These goals shouldn’t seem out of your reach – even modest weight loss may mean a lot to your health.”

Setting goals for a weight loss program is important. It lets you know how you’re doing. But the number of pounds isn’t the only thing you should be focusing on. As you are dieting you should notice changes in your health and any health conditions that you may have. Blood pressure may come down. High levels of other things, such as cholesterol, may drop. Your BMI will be changing as well. These are all important milestones, and victories in and of themselves.

I think the My Healthy campaign is a great idea because it takes the primary focus off of the number of pounds lost and lets people focus on other things, like how much health has been gained. Americans across the country who have struggled with weight loss are encouraged to get involved in the My Healthy™ movement. Help inspire others by sharing photos and videos at myhealthy.com.

Have you ever struggled with your weight or dieting? Where did you find motivation or turn for support? Please leave a comment, I’d really like to know!

Yeah, fad diets are decent enough for a jump start to a more sensible diet, but I can never stick with them. This seems much more doable.

I like that My Healthy Promise focuses on positives. I think one positive can easily lead to another and have a great domino effect.
