I am old. Well, middle-aged. I’m 48. When I was pregnant with my first child if I was having an issue that required any medication at all, over the counter or prescription, I made sure I discussed it with my ob/gyn first. I followed his instructions on brands and dosages. As luck had had it I was already using the OTC pain reliever he recommended so there was no change there. Once the baby was born that was pretty much the last time I had to think about meds and any impact they might have, until a few years later when I got pregnant with my second child.
I have a friend who is breastfeeding, something I did not do. I am constantly amazed by the number of things she has to think about because she breastfeeds, most especially medications and foods. She is careful with anything she ingests, and I have no doubt she’d sooner suffer herself before taking something that might harm her baby. She researches everything from meds to foods and the ingredients in them. It’s a lot of work, but it’s very necessary. Recently I learned about an app called MommyMeds that is designed to be a leading resource for expectant and breastfeeding mothers.

Created by one of the world’s leading experts in perinatal pharmacology, Dr. Thomas Hale, MommyMeds helps empower expectant and breastfeeding moms and sure to be a go to resource.
“A healthy mom makes a healthy baby,” InfantRisk Center Executive Director, Dr. Hale said. “There’s almost always something a pregnant mother can use safely, and we want to promote that with a variety of useful tools and information.”
Supported by the Laura W. Bush Foundation, MommyMeds provides resources such as:
● Information for more than 20,000 drugs, vitamins and herbals
● Safety information about drugs during each trimester and while breastfeeding
● Lists appropriate drugs for various conditions while pregnant or breastfeeding, including headache, nausea, allergies and more
● Convenient barcode scanner for over-the-counter medications
● Hot topics related to pregnancy and breastfeeding
App users can enter a product name or sort by category to find product information and determine if it is safe for use. The app goes well with the full MommyMeds site, whose WebMD feel provides resources for expectant and breastfeeding mothers, lactation specialists and other professionals. Information in the app and on the site is easy to understand, which is always appreciated at a time when so many worry about so many other things.
