Liberty Science Center to Showcase Backup Chilean Mine Rescue Drill

Jersey City, NJ – April 4, 2011 — In October 2010, the world watched in awe as 33 miners were rescued from a collapsed mine in Capiapo, Chile an incredible 2-1/2 months ahead of schedule, thanks in part to the technical prowess of Center Rock, Inc. of Berlin, PA.

From April 9 – 23, as part of its mission of bringing outstanding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiences to guests, Liberty Science Center will display the backup drill created for the Chilean rescue by Center Rock. The original remains in Chile. The drill will be on display in Governors Hall near the main staircase and unveiled during the Center’s April 8 Citizen Science Gala.

Center Rock makes drills, hammers, and bits for construction, mining, water-well, and energy operations. Last fall, the firm shipped a 12-x 5.5-inch drill with a pilot hole-opener bit to Chile as part of an effort to reach the trapped miners. Using a novel drilling technique, they located the miners trapped 2,000 feet underground, pinpointing their position and determining a safe location for a hole large enough to accommodate the rescue operation.
