Preface – I apologize, these pictures didn’t come out all that well. I am going to try retaking them next time I make these.
Ham and cheese sandwiches are always a favorite in our house. So are mozzarella sticks. One night when my son asked if he could have a sandwich I decided to see what would happen if I added some ham to some homemade mozzarella sticks. The result was quite tasty – ooey, gooey cheese is always yummy and adding a subtle flavor of ham just tasted right. My son loved them and immediately wanted more.
You will notice that I cut each slice of ham in half. I did this because I wondered if the water in the ham would have a big impact on how it cooked. I have little doubt that the flavor with a whole piece would be a bit better as the ham wouldn’t be as subtle, but I didn’t try it with a whole slice of ham. If you do try making these and use a whole slice of ham for each stick I’d really appreciate it if you let me know how it comes out. Here’s how I made them.
Homemade Ham And Mozzarella Sticks
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
- 2 eggs
- 6 sticks string cheese
- 3 slices imported ham (I use the very wide slices)
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat deep fryer to 350 f.
Cut the slices of ham in half.
Place eggs in a bowl and stir.
Place the bread crumbs into a second bowl.
Unwrap the mozzarella string cheese.
Wrap each cheese stick in a slice of ham and put a toothpick through the middle to hold the wrap closed.
Dip each ham wrapped cheese stick into the egg and then dip into the bread crumbs. Place on a plate.

Redip each cheese stick in the egg and bread crumbs.
Using tongs immediately place the ham and cheese sticks into the deep fryer. Cook until the breading on the sticks is golden and getting crunchy, which is about 5-6 minutes.
Place the cooked sticks onto a paper towel as you take them out of the deep fryer in order to remove excess oil.

Serve immediately as is or with your favorite dipping sauce. You can remove the toothpicks before serving if you like.
Note – You could cut the cheese sticks in half and the ham info quarters in the beginning if you want to make smaller appetizers.

Not only does this look awesome on its own, but it happens to be a couple of my favorite foods together. I started a diet this New Year but I'm bookmarking this for the moment I'm taking my next break. Yum!
