Over the past couple of months I’ve written several posts about how important it is to try and achieve your pet’s perfect weight. I wrote about it twice for Dobby, in May and June, and once for Jules in early August. Basically, the short version of the whole topic is this. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, more than 50% of pets in the U.S. are overweight. If your pet is at an unhealthy weight it has a direct effect on your pet’s quality of life and life expectancy. The Hill’s Human-to-Pet Weight Comparison tool  shows that just a tiny bit of extra weight on our pet is the equivalent of much more in people terms. For example, five extra pounds on a 70 pound Golden Retriever is the equivalent of 8.9 extra pounds on a woman. Here are two additional things you can do to keep your pet healthy.

For those of us that have children, we teach them young to brush their teeth, stay clean and exercise. It isn’t any different for pets. Aside from eating a quality food, regular exercise will also help prevent your pet from becoming overweight. Plus they love it! There are many ways to exercise including walking, running and playing! Brush your pets teeth or have them cleaned. Also, there are some dental chews that will help remove tartar from your pets teeth. Dental hygiene is just as important for pets as it is humans. Regular grooming serves a number of purposes. First of all it strengthens the bond between you and your pet. Second it keeps them looking their best. Regular grooming is a great way to watch for potential flea and tick problems.
