Sometimes we order out. Inevitably we wind up ordering from the same few restaurants. Because in my mind I think “how can I order food from a place I haven’t been when I can’t even see their menu.” And, then if I get past that it’s followed by “will said food be any good?” And what will it cost? I mean, obviously there’s a price for the food. Sometimes you sort of know what that is. Most of the restaurants in my area sigh a bit if you ask them for a total for the order, because then they have to actually add it up. Oh the inconvenience for them! And on top of that in my area a number of restaurants now also charge a delivery fee to cover their gas. I have seen that fee be as high as $10! Things would be so much simpler if there was a way to see what restaurants had and what things cost as you order, with no hidden charges.

This week I learned that such a way actually exists! Yes folks, that’s right. Let me introduce you to GrubHub. GrubHub is an online food ordering company that connects hungry people like you and I to approximately 30,000 takeout restaurants in more than 800 U.S. cities and London. Wow, that’s a lot of restaurants! Just put in your address and/or zip code and you’ll find the ones in your area.

You can browse by types of restaurants (Chinese, pizza, etc) or just browse through them all. I looked through the list and was familiar with some, but not with most. I decided to try a Chinese restaurant we’d never been to or ordered from. The online ordering process is super easy. The whole menu is there to see.

When you see an item you want to order you click on it. The item will be added to your order, which is displayed on the right. Any applicable taxes are added on right as you go, so you know what the meal is going to cost you down to the penny. In my area delivery is a very reasonable $2 per order. Once you’ve decided what you want you pay for your order online. You see confirmation on the screen immediately. You also get confirmation by email and text.

Besides using it for yourself, it would also be a fun way for parents to treat children away from home (such as college students) to a meal.

For example, my son’s girlfriend is a great student and studies pretty hard. Sometimes if he goes to see her he wants to get a bite to eat. I like the idea of being able to place and pay for an order online, which means I don’t have to think to keep cash to give him before he leaves. (I never keep cash on me.) After just a very quick glance I saw that GrubHub has at least 23 restaurants near her school.

In some areas there’s no delivery fee. That’s right! For example. Right now, more than 60 restaurants in the Philly area are offering delivery free takeout food on GrubHub! Check out the GrubHub Philly Blog Post to find specific restaurants, including local favorites, in the Philly area right now.

I can see where GrubHub would also be great if you’re traveling. Over the summer I was in Boston. A friend and I wanted to go out to eat. Parking in the city was not fun. We didn’t know where anything was. Had I known about GrubHub then I would have used that to have food brought to our hotel, saving us a lot of time, money, and energy.

Back to my GrubHub experience last night. I ordered. I had two errands to run in the area so I chose to pick up my meal. I went to the restaurant at the time specified. They verified my name and phone number and handed me my order, which I had just seen being bagged as I walked in the door. It’s really difficult to get excited about cold takeout so I loved finding my food fresh and hot.

I went onto GrubHub to rate the restaurant this morning. I had to hunt a little for the restaurant we’d used. Wondering why? I did. It’s interesting. Only restaurants that are open appear in a GrubHub search. At first that didn’t make sense, but then I thought about it and decided it was actually a good thing. Noone likes spending time looking over menus and getting ready to order only to discover the restaurant isn’t open, right? I did find the retaurant in my order history, where you can also store your favorite restaurants and restaurants you want to try, as well as payment info if you choose.

We were very pleased with our GrubHub experience and will be using it again.
