I’m old. I’ve mentioned this before and have no doubt that the subject will come up again. When I had my oldest son in the 90s, people weren’t as focused on what ingredients were in foods foods as they are now. I really didn’t start paying much attention to food labels at all until my youngest was diagnosed with Celiac disease. It was then that I started actually reading labels. It was also then that I started wishing for precise labels that would let consumers know exactly what was in the food that they’re buying. Fast forward to today and Beech-Nut has made that wish come true.
A few days ago, Beech-Nut became the first baby food company in the United States to list the percentage of each ingredient used in their recipes. If you’re like me then for you this is a decision that really makes a statement. For years I would look at a label and only know which ingredient a product had the most of, because that ingredient was first on the label. Big deal. Ever had a product that boasted to include an ingredient, only for you to try the product and not taste that ingredient? I have. That’s happened because nobody has ever stepped up and said “hey there’s only 2% of that in there.” Until now.
Beech-Nut knows that parents like you and I want what’s best for our babies. So, they’ve changed the way that they label ingredents, so that now you not only know exactly what ingredients used, but also what percentage of those ingredients is in there. Beech-Nut has a long term vision for the brand, and obviously wants consumers to have confidence in them. To that end they want to be completely transparent about what ingredients and amounts of them are used in recipes. As the company works to meet their vision and improves food you can also expect labels to be updated.
“All parents want the best for their babies, and they want to know exactly what they are eating,” said Jeff Boutelle, president of Beech-Nut, in a press release. “We don’t want parents to worry about the foods they’re feeding their babies, which is why we’re sharing our recipes.”
You can read more about what led to the decision to label with transparency on the CSPI website. And I encourage you to take a look at the ingredients inside Beech-Nut jars and pouches of food – they are all listed on the Beech-Nut website. You might be surprised at what’s in there!
Beech-Nut has been around since 1931. I remember their product well from when my boys were young. I think that their decision to label with transparency is a welcome and needed step in today’s world. Parents feeding Beech-Nut baby food will know exactly what their babies are eating. If I were caring for a baby right now I know that I’d want to be able to say that.

My own mother made most of my baby food--eggs, pastina, mashed potatoes, applesauce, homemade soups, jellos, puddings. My mother who tended my firstborn while I worked full-time continued her pattern. Fresh, no preservatives table food meant one meal for the family prep at considerable cost savings. Lesson learned, I immediately bought a blender and did similarly.
