I have a 14 year old going into high school that will be starting out in Algebra. A calculator is required for the course. I know that Algebra can be challenging for many students, so I wanted to find a calculator that would be as helpful as possible. I jumped at the opportunity to check out the Texas Instruments TI-NSpire Calculator, in the hopes it would be a good fit for my son.
ABOUT THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TI-NSPIRE CALCULATOR
The Texas Instruments Ti-nspire Graphing Calculator with Touchpad features Includes an easy-glide Touchpad that works more like a computer with a mouse, See multiple representations of a single problem – algebraic, graphical, geometric, numeric and written, Explore individual representations, one at a time, or as many as four on the same screen, Grab a graphed function and move it to see the effect on corresponding equations and data lists and Link representations – Manipulate the properties of one and observe instant updates to others without switching screens.
MY THOUGHTS
Prior to this calculator I hadn’t seen any others that connect to the computer, something that would surely be helpful in that it would make studying easier and productive. The calculator is on the longer side but is pretty thin and light. It’s got a 3.2″ diagonal screen that lets you visualize your graphs and equations in 3D. This calculator has a touchpad, which is sort of like a cross between a computer mouse and a laptop trackpad. Not only can you do calculations on this calculator, you can take notes. I love that the calculator connects to your computer’s USB port, allowing you to access your work and continue it, as well as access your notes. This would make for some super effective homework and study time. The calculator takes four AAA batteries but a rechargeable battery is available. What students will love the most is that this calculator is approved for use during standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT and ACT. Now that’s a helpful tool!
