APP REVIEW – @PlayTownForKids – PlayTown: My Story Maker

PlayTown: My Story Maker is an adorable new app for kids, ages 3-9. With PlayTown: My Story Maker, your child can create, personalize, and narrate his own stories. The app is free for both iOS and Android and includes three Adventure Play Sets to get your child started on his story-making adventures!

I am always on the lookout for unique apps for my daughter. She loves her iPod, but it seems like there are so many of the same types of apps – silly dress up games, annoying talking animals, etc. I try to find apps that are different but provide a lasting entertainment value rather than something she will get bored of the next day.

PlayTown: My Story Maker seems to be just the type of app I look for! I’ve never seen a story-creating app before, let alone one that gives so many options to play around with. Though it’s recommended for ages 3-9, I personally would say more like 6-9 for a child playing by himself, but it could be entertaining for younger children with a parent’s help. I think it might be just a little too confusing for the younger crowd to figure out by themselves.

For your first time using the app, Toybo will walk you through making your first story: select an Adventure Play Set, choose your background, customize your scene, change accessories on your character, and record your story! There are several options for customizing your character to make your story exactly how you want it to be.

Once you choose your play set and character, you can change the clothing and accessories on your character. Using the free “Travel Around the World” play set, I customized a pretty Native American character.

I then went even further with the customizing and added my own face, swapped the hairdo for some long hair, and put on a Kimono!

Once you’re done customizing, you can put your character where you want in the scene and then record your voice using the “Rec” button. The app will save your voice and then play back your scene with your voice as the narrator! At the end is a special surprise: rolling credits with your child’s name as the director! You can even share your story with friends.
