I love coming up with new recipes and meal ideas. I sometimes find it a lot of fun to take one recipe and put my own spin on it, creating something else entirely. Recently the folks at Ragú challenged me to pick two of their recipes and see how I could put my own spin on them. Yes that’s right, not only does Ragú have a good variety of different sauces, they also have a good variety of great tasting, quick and easy to make family favorite recipes. The first recipe I chose to remake was their Upside-Down Deep Dish Pizza recipe, which looks like this.

After much thought, I decided to turn my recipe into something that the husband would love. Hopefully, anyway. He loves pizza. I believe pizza needs a bottom. He isn’t terribly nuts about a lot of bread and dough, so I wanted to keep the crust thin.  He loves spinach. The Ragú recipe calls for a jar of  Ragú Old World Style Traditional Sauce, which is made with 11 juicy tomatoes, making it their richest, thickest recipe. I didn’t want to use a red sauce, as I felt it wouldn’t be the best to pair with my ingredients. I chose to use one of the great tasting Ragú white sauces instead.

Ragu Creamy Mozzarella Sauce

I decided to make a Cheesy Spinach And Sausage Stuffed Pizza. Basically, aside from using pizza dough, I swapped out every item in their recipe for another except for the spinach. Bye bye red sauce, hello Ragú Creamy Mozzarella Sauce! Oh and the cheese from the original recipe? Gone. I didn’t use any, because this creamy sauce is nothing but yummy cheese! Here’s how I made the dish.

Cheesy Spinach And Sausage Stuffed Pizza

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 pizza crusts (I used refrigerated pizza crust, the thin crust variety)
  • 1 lb ground mild Italian sausage
  • 1x 10 oz box frozen chopped spinach
  • 1x 16 oz jar Ragú Creamy Mozzarella Sauce
  • 1 tsp spreadable margarine (or softened butter)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp parsley

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 375 f.

While the oven is preheating brown the sausage.

At the same time, place the frozen spinach into a small bowl and thaw partway by heating on high in the microwave for 3 minutes.

When the spinach has heated for 3 minutes, remove from the microwave and mix half of the contents of the jar of sauce with the spinach.

When the sausage is cooked, pour half of the contents of the jar of sauce into the pan and mix well.

Place one pie crust in the bottom of a 9″ pie plate.

Place the sausage mixture in the bottom of the pie plate.

Place the spinach mixture on top of the sausage mixture.

Place the second crust onto the top of the pie, pinching shut all the way around the pie plate.

Brush or rub the pie crust with the softened butter or margarine.

Sprinkle the onion powder, garlic powder and parsley on the crust.

Puncture the crust with a fork in one or two spots. I generally make them near where I know I’ll be slicing the pie.

Bake for 18-20 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let sit for about 5 minutes.

Serve and enjoy.
