MOM KNOWS IT ALL 2019 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE - Candlewick Press Children’s Holiday Books

Around the Table That Grandad built celebrates family, traditions, thanksgiving and friendship. I picked this book because we are having a huge harvest table made out of a tree from our yard and I think as years go by, our table will create similar warm memories.

Freedom Soup tells about the Haitian custom of making soup to celebrate the New Year. This book is filled with culture and family and any child would be excited to read it.

The Little Snowplow Wishes for Snow is the new Little Snowplow book that follows The Little Snowplow, which was a #1 New York Times bestseller. Your child will be delighted by the lovely illustrations and sweet story. My grand dangly an early peek at this and as soon as I finished reading it, they begged me to read it again!

A Day for Skating has beautiful illustrations and follows a young skaters’ first time on the ice. You will almost feel like you’re part of the lively skaters on the pond. All the happy traditions of cold weather fun are included, even hot chocolate after!

Little Robins Christmas is the sweetest story of a little robin giving away his warm vests the week before Christmas as he meet some cold fellow animals. The spirit of giving is a beautiful theme to read about at Christmas time and helps instill that value in our little ones.

These are the sunflowers picked by my cousins,
set on the table that Grandad built.

In a unique take on the cumulative classic “This Is the House That Jack Built,” a family gathers with friends and neighbors to share a meal around a table that brims with associations: napkins sewn by Mom, glasses from Mom and Dad’s wedding, silverware gifted to Dad by his grandma long ago. Not to mention the squash from the garden, the bread baked by Gran, and the pies made by the young narrator (with a little help). Serving up a diverse array of dishes and faces, this warm and welcoming story is poised to become a savored part of Thanksgiving traditions to come.

Join the celebration in the kitchen as a family makes their traditional New Year’s soup — and shares the story of how Haitian independence came to be.

The shake-shake of maracas vibrates down to my toes.
Ti Gran’s feet tap-tap to the rhythm.

Every year, Haitians all over the world ring in the new year by eating a special soup, a tradition dating back to the Haitian Revolution. This year, Ti Gran is teaching Belle how to make the soup — Freedom Soup — just like she was taught when she was a little girl. Together, they dance and clap as they prepare the holiday feast, and Ti Gran tells Belle about the history of the soup, the history of Belle’s family, and the history of Haiti, where Belle’s family is from. In this celebration of cultural traditions passed from one generation to the next, Jacqueline Alcántara’s lush illustrations bring to life both Belle’s story and the story of the Haitian Revolution. Tami Charles’s lyrical text, as accessible as it is sensory, makes for a tale that readers will enjoy to the last drop.
