Recently I was asked to come up with an original recipe for making spare ribs. I’d never even attempted one before and thought it would be fun to see what I could come up with. Everyone I talked to told me that ribs take many hours to cook. Since we don’t have a grill and were going to be cooking over my parents, I didn’t want to impose myself for 6-8 hours in what was already a busy weekend for all of us. So I decided to start by braising the ribs in the oven at home and then transferring to the grill. This would be a great method for anyone that wants or needs to cut down the time it takes to make ribs for whatever reason. Plus it meant no standing outside flipping on a humid, rainy day for me, something that simply isn’t an option for me any more.
The ingredients are really simple.
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of paprika
- 2 tablespoon of garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon of onion powder
- 2 tablespoons of fresh ground pepper
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 2 tablespon Parmeson cheese
- 2 tbsp McCormick Grill Mates Molasses Bacon Seasoning
- Kraft Thick N Spicy Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce
- 2x 5 lb racks of pork spare ribs
Rinse ribs with water.
Pat dry ribs with a paper towel.
Mix all spices and the cheese (that’s all ingredients except BBQ sauce and ribs) in a medium sized bowl.
Sprinkle the spice rub onto the rubs.
Rub spice rub into the ribs.
Wrap the racks of ribs in plastic and refrigerate for 2-8 hours, the longer the better.
Time to braise the ribs.
Remove the ribs from the fridge.
Preheat oven to 200.
Remove the plastic wrap.
Wrap ribs in aluminum foil tightly.
Place in oven.
Cook ribs at 200 for 30 minutes.
Lower oven temperature to 175 and cook for another 90 minutes.
Time to grill the ribs.
Remove the ribs from the oven.
Cover the ribs in BBQ sauce. Just slather it on there.
Now you need to put the bacon onto the ribs.
This was pretty easy since we were using a stand that allowed our racks of ribs to stand instead of lay flat on the grill.
Put the rack stand with the ribs onto the grill, which should be set to use on indirect heat.
Cook the ribs on medium-high for about 60 minutes.
When ribs look crusty and done remove from heat.
That’s it, the ribs are done!
