We love music in our house. I find it interesting to listen to new artists and new music, and to watch our music culture grow and change. That’s why I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to check out a new artist and a new album by Team Mom Music. New to us, that is.

Corneille’s album The Birth Of Cornelius is the artist’s first album in the English language. How fitting that he’s signed to Motown Records, a label celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year, as he cites original Motown music and artists such as Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson as some of his primary musical influences.

Corneille was born in Germany and at the age of seven moved with his family to Rwanda, his parents birthplace. He won a state sponsored music competition at age 16. Although never really fitting in, he called Rwanda home until 1994, when at the age of seventeen his family was killed during in the largest genocide in modern history, leaving him with nothing but memories. He escaped to Germany, seeking shelter with some family friends. After three more years in Germany he felt the need to go to North America to continue his dream of a career in music.

“Music has been the place where I could go to hide and forget about the world. I couldn’t make sense of a majority of the things that happened to me, so I used music as a shield. But over time, music has become a vehicle to channel out everything that I’ve been keeping from myself for all these years. And the new album is definitely the most honest, real assessment of everything that’s happened in my life, because I’m not trying to hide as much.”—Corneille

Once in Montreal, Corneille formed a band and in 2002 released his first studio album. He’s toured successfully in Europe. He’s attained diamond selling status and received the Felix award for Best Male Artist in France. Recognizing that he had a voice for conveying a message as well as singing soulful songs, Corneille was made a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is a Red Cross Canada spokesperson.

Although R&B isn’t my favorite style of music, I found it relaxing. Corneille’s voice is very smooth. His lyrics speak of his feelings, his memories, his past and his future. He’s turned the tragedy of his youth into inspiration and a tribute to his parents who supported his love for music. His songs are real and honest, with lyrics falling just short of haunting at times. This is the kind of music I love to put on and relax with a cup of coffee with. If you’re looking for some smooth, soulful music to add to your collection pick up The Birth Of Cornelius.

The Birth of Cornelius is available in stores this month (03/10/09) on the Motown label. You can learn more about Corneille on his website,
