I’ve loved bananas since I was a child. A plain banana has always been one of my favorite snacks. Bananas make yummy things too, when you use them as an ingredient for things like cakes, pies and muffins. And people love them in ice cream, my goodness! But never once did I think of bananas as being ice cream. Not until I learned about the Dole Bananas Peel The Love.
Wondering what the Dole Bananas Peel The Love is exactly? I’ll tell you. Peel the Love is a year-long Dole campaign that celebrates the fun, irreverence and universal “belovedness” of bananas. A whole year of banana goodness, including recipes, pairing and serving ideas, and entertaining tips. Part of this campaign is a coast-to-coast Peel the Love Food Truck Tour that will visit the D.C./Baltimore area and seven other banana-loving cities from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fun fact from Dole. NYC enjoys higher-than-average banana consumption and a significantly greater appreciation for the iconic yellow fruit than the rest of the country. The DOLE Bananas Peel the Love Tour is actually not too far from me right now, it’s in New York City from August 21 to September 2.
One thing I learned is that you can use Dole Bananas to make your own ice cream. Yes, you heard me right. You can make ice cream with Dole Bananas by using a Yonanas machine. When I first heard about this, I was very skeptical. Until I decided to host a little Peel the Love Party and tried it for myself.
First you need bananas. Obviously. Like the ones up top, you’d think, right? Nope. That’s not what you want to use to make the ice cream. You’ll want to use over-ripe, spotted bananas. so keep those pretty ones and let them sit around for a couple of days like I had to do.
You must freeze the bananas for 24 hours before you’re going to make the ice cream. This is important. And if you don’t read all of the instructions, like I occasionally don’t, that one piece of information will make a huge difference in your ice cream.
Next comes the hard part. Deciding what you’re going to make.
You can make Simply Yonanas ice cream with 2 bananas. Nothing else.
Simply Plain Yonanas was surprisingly yummy. It has a texture between that of frozen yogurt and ice cream. It’s very smooth, and it holds it’s consistency for quite some time. You can also add things to the Simply Plain Yonanas. So if you like Oreo Cookies like me you’d probably make Cookies & Cream Yonanas.
You can add other fruits. We made Mixed Berry Yonanas by adding 3/4 cup of frozen mixed berries to the 2 bananas.
Then we decided to try the Yonanas machine with the bananas. We made a mixed berry sorbet by using just1 cup of frozen mixed berries. It was do delicious! Then we decided to go a bit out of the box and mix two. So we mixed the Mixed Berry Yonanas with the Mixed Berry sorbet. We put a little whipped cream on top and we had a hit. Everyone agreed it was amazing!
We’re quite fascinated with the Yonanas machine, and how many things it lets us do with bananas. And it’s healthy, because it’s just bananas (and whatever we add to them). We’ve been planning our next get together and what yummy trreats we’re going to mal=ke.
Here are the dates and locations in the NY and NJ area for the DOLE Bananas Peel the Love Tour.
