Have You Been Wanting To Start A Garden? Here are 6 Reasons Why You Should

Many of us dream of starting a garden, but never actually get around to it. We like the idea of spending time outdoors, growing our own vegetables and herbs, and then getting to use them once they are fully grown. But once it comes time to start doing the work, life gets in the way and we put it on the back-burner. If you’ve been thinking about starting a garden, but just haven’t gotten started yet, here are a few reasons why you should reconsider, and give yourself that extra push.

Healthier Vegetables

When you purchase vegetables from a supermarket, you are getting foods that have been sitting for awhile, and were covered in chemicals in order to keep bugs away and make them safe for travel. While these chemicals may not cause too much harm to your body, it would still be better to eat foods without the chemicals. When you grow your own vegetables, you control the process, and can keep these chemicals away from your foods if you so choose.

Improved Taste

Not only are the vegetables you grow yourself healthier, but they taste better too. If you’ve never tasted a freshly grown tomato, picked right off of the vine, you are really missing out. Knowing you planted and grew the vegetable yourself only adds to the flavor. If you want to have one of the best meals of your life, make sure it includes some of your personally grown vegetables.

It Will Improve Your Diet

If your current diet lacks enough vegetables, growing your own may be a way to get you to eat more. There is a certain level of satisfaction that comes with growing your own foods, and once you have accomplished it, you will be excited to eat them. There are plenty of reasons to try and improve your diet, including better physical health, a better mood, and better mental health. It Get’s You Outside

Too many of us spend all day inside, working in an office, and we don’t get to see sunlight. Even on the weekends we are so busy that we don’t find the time to get outside and just enjoy the fresh air. When you start a garden, you’ll have to spend at least a few minutes outside every day, watering your garden and checking in on your plants. This will allow you to absorb some Vitamin D from the sun, and the few minutes outside can help you to relieve stress.

It Can Save You Money

Another reason to start a garden is that it can be economically friendly. Sure, you are going to have to shell out some money to get your garden started – buying seeds, planters, soil, and other gardening equipment. However, if you are smart about your gardening, and you consider the other benefits you get from it, starting a garden is a smart choice.

For example, by growing tomatoes in your garden, you won’t have to go out and by them. Working in the garden is also a lot of physical labor, so you can cancel that gym membership. Been spending on money on yoga classes to relax? A few minutes working out in your garden can have the same benefits. Taken all together, a garden can be a great way to save money if you want to.

You’ll Have A Better Looking Yard

Finally, a garden improves the landscape. If your backyard is looking a little dull or boring, imagine how it will look when you have bright red tomatoes, some purple eggplants, and some yellow squash growing back there. Gardens of all types look beautiful, and can really add to the aesthetic of any yard.

Start Your Garden This Weekend

The next time you have a few hours off, consider going to your local nursery and getting some garden supplies. You can set up a small garden in a couple of hours, and from there you’ll have an activity that will yield you some great benefits. There are plenty of reasons to start a garden, so keep them all in mind the next time you try to put it off.

There's something so wonderful about taking the time to grow and care for a garden. I have such fond memories of doing this with my mother and hope to do it again someday.

I've always had a garden until I moved to my apartment. You've made me want to garden again. I'll have to consider a container garden. Your tips are so helpful.
