This post is brought to you by Metromile.

I worked out of the home for many years. During those years, for all jobs except one I was very fortunate to not have to drive more than 3-4 miles to get to work. There were many weeks that I drove less than 60 miles, and many months where I drove only 200 miles or so. Nevertheless, my rates were in line with those who put many miles on their car. High insurance rates are something I’ve grown accustomed to over the years. After all, New Jersey is the fifth most expensive state to own a car, and part of that reason is the high insurance New Jersey residents face.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the average driver logs 13,476 miles per year. As you know, averages are made up by finding the middle point of the lows and highs. Translated, that means there is a marked number of people driving less than the average number, myself included. New Jersey residents like me that don’t put a large amount of miles on their car now have the option to pay for their auto insurance by the mile. Designed for those who drive less than 10,000 miles a year, Metromile is the first and only pay-per-mile auto insurance model in the state of New Jersey. Drivers only pay a few cents per mile with a low base rate each month for full coverage, with no judgment on driving style or behavior. A typical customer is able to save nearly $500 annually by using Metromile as their auto insurance solution, which is also available in California, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

“At Metromile, we believe that people who hardly drive should hardly pay for car insurance,” said Dan Preston, CEO of Metromile. “Living in New Jersey is expensive, but, for low-mileage drivers, high-priced car insurance will be a thing of the past as they will see significant savings with Metromile’s pay-permile model.”
Metromile’s goal is to transform both car insurance and car ownership, making it more intelligent, seamless, and accessible. The heart of the process is the Metromile Pulse device and the Metromile app. The Metromile Pulse is a small device that is easily installed by plugging it into the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic (OBDII) port. Vehicles produced from 1996 on should have this port. Once connected, the Pulse collects information on vehicle health information and location-based data, as well as usage data including speed and direction.

Data collected by the Pulse is transmitted to the Metromile app, giving customers more insight into their car’s health and their driving patterns. Some of the information the app is able to provide customers includes:
- Locate a missing car
- Receive street sweeping alerts (currently in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco)
- Decode those mysterious check engine lights
- Contact our staff mechanic with any questions
- View details for each trip, like miles driven and gas costs
- Always know how much you owe

Of course, the Pulse also collects miles driven, which is crucial to have under this revolutionary pay-per-mile insurance model. Metromile bills customers transparently based on a monthly base rate and the miles residents actually drive. Policies are sold through Metromile Insurance Services LLC and are underwritten by insurers in the National General Insurance Group. Those not ready to switch insurance providers can access the Metromile App in beta and receive many of the same features that insurance customers enjoy.
Here’s a brief video that helps explain Metromile.

I got wait listed. (https://www.metromile.com/insurance-wait-list/) I would use the GC as I always do...for my 13 elderly rescue cats. Most have no teeth, hypertension, etc...all the same thing older people get.

My area doesn't have Metromile yet, and I'm signed up for the waitlist. I would use the savings for a family vacation.
