I love to travel. My travel bucket list reads like this – “I want to go to all of the places.” I am always interested to hear stories about locations that I’m totally unfamiliar with. I learn a little about the region and it gives me a little information on the chance I ever do get to travel to that region. I hadn’t previously heard of Lanzarote until Jessie shared this article with me, which I am sharing with you with permission.

Experience Lanzarote on a Tight Budget

Located off the northwestern coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are an ever-popular destination among tourists wanting the ultimate in sun, sea, and sand. But while the more mainstream islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife attract the most visitors, a lot can be said for taking a trip to Lanzarote instead.

This atmospheric island has gone to great lengths to preserve its natural beauty in spite of growing tourist interest. As a result, Lanzarote boasts a host of sustainable attractions and more of a traditional charm compared to its commercialised siblings.

What’s more, you can still explore these authentic attributes on a tight budget if you bear the following tips in mind.

Flights and accommodation

Numerous low-cost airlines fly to Lanzarote from mainland Europe, meaning you should be able to secure a competitively priced fare all year-round. But to avoid hefty charges, pack everything in your hand luggage and avoid using a checked suitcase.

In terms of accommodation, it might be cheaper to choose self-catering and cook most of your own meals. However, this also means you could miss out on the delectable Spanish cuisine that Lanzarote has to offer.

Besides, all-inclusive Lanzarote holidays might be a more cost-effective option anyway. You can pay for everything up front and the only thing you’ll need to budget for while in Lanzarote is spending money.

Things to see and do

Budget-conscious travellers will be pleased to hear that the entrance fee to some of Lanzarote’s best attractions costs less than €10. These include:

• Cueva de los Verdes – A series of underground caverns and tunnels that were formed by an underground river of lava.
• Jardin de Cactus – Home to one of the biggest and best collections of cacti in the world.
• Timanfaya National Park – Admission to the visitors’ centre is free, but you’ll have to pay for a bus tour around the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire).

On top of that, wandering the streets of the quaint capital Arrecife and basking on Lanzarote’s alluring beaches is completely free!

Getting around

As a relatively small island, you could quite easily explore the whole of Lanzarote in little more than a day. Therefore, hiring a car for 24 hours to traverse the island’s barren yet beautiful landscapes won’t cost too much.

But if this is out of your reach, both buses and taxis provide great value for money. Also, you will get to live and breathe Lanzarote like a local and have more money to spend on souvenirs and duty free.

So, from a financial perspective, taking a trip to Lanzarote can be incredibly affordable but still provide a rewarding holiday experience.
