Greece is a place that I’ve always wanted to visit. This list of reasons to visit Greece, shred with permission, contains some of the famous cities we’ve all heard about for years.

Greece is a country that combines the beauty of a coastal Mediterranean landscape with the history of one of the world’s most important and foundational empires. And with the difficulties the Greek economy has been suffering there is no better time to visit, as a holiday will be both cheaper and will go a long well to helping the recovery. So if you’re thinking of planning a getaway, then here are a few reason why Greece might be the best choice for your holidays.

Athens

One of the world’s most important and historic cities, Athens is home to great cultural activities like Greek music and events, as well as some great archaeological sites, like the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon, the Panathenaic Stadium, the Temple of Hephaestus and more. The famous old town of the Plaka is also a great place to stroll through and stop for drinks, shopping, or to visit the Acropolis Museum.

Thessaloniki

Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki has a wonderful amount of cultural offerings in store for its visitors, including Turkish baths, Byzantine walls, and outdoor markets full of Greek goods and produce. If you’re after the ultimate in Greek nightlife, then this city might be a destination to add to your itinerary.

Peloponnese

Peloponnese might be most famously known for the wars that have been fought here over the years, including the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars. The major cities of the area are Corinth, Argos, Megalopolis, and Sparta. Today the region is scattered with a vast amount of ancient and medieval historical sites, including Olympia, the site of the first Olympics, and Mystra’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Delphi

This is Greece’s second most famous archaeological site, perhaps only visited less often than the Acropolis due to its more remote location on the hillside of Mount Parnassus, the home of the ancient muses. The mythical ruins include the Temple of Apollo, the Altar of Chains, a theatre, and hippodrome.

The Islands

The Greek Islands are known worldwide for the serene beauty and stunning beaches, that make them some of the hottest holiday destinations in the world. Each one of these islands has its own unique experience to offer, from Mykonos to Santorini, and Corfu to Rhodes. You’ll have a hard time only picking one to visit.
