Muay Thai Training Not What I Expected

We'd love it if you shared it!

Muay Thai School Wall

My oldest son is very physically fit, and very good at most sports. A couple of years ago he dated a girl whose parents owned a kickboxing school. He asked if he could take lessons. I gave in and said yes, and worked my butt off to come up with the money every month. No discount for the boyfriend. They broke up and life went on. I half thought he’d want to give up the kickboxing. I was mistaken. He immediately asked me if we could look at some other schools, which we did. We found one almost immediately. Not only was it closer but it was less money, so it worked out well.

Since it’s so close, I’ve gone up to watch some of the classes. The more my son tells me and the more I see at the school the most fascinated I get. it’s not what I originally expected. It’s not all about kicking people’s butt at all.  Students all take the classes for their own individual reasons. The schools are all a little different too. Some schools are known for different specialties. The Suwit muay thai school, for example, is known for weight loss. The school my son goes to is thought of very highly, both by students and their families.  The instructors all demand, and receive, respect from the students. The school has a creed. One of my favorite things about the school is that it has all sorts of motivational and inspirational quotes on the wall, containing positive messages that could apply to anyone, not just those learning muay thai.

My son has advanced twice now. He enjoys the classes and workouts tremendsouly. He really gets into them. This is a picture I took of him not long ago. I love it because he looks so focused and calm. He said he thinks it looks like he’s praying.

Do you or anyone in your family take martial arts lessons? I’d love to know, please leave a comment!

I took martial arts when I was younger. I really wish my boys would start. My oldest is 5 and I'm trying to get him interested but so far I've had no luck.

My girls both asked last year and we looked into it locally. As you know, quite expensive! For us, the classes were too crowded to justify the costs but we'll look into it again in a couple years.

My son has done MMA and karate. It's a great way to stay in shape and to learn self control.

I do. My concern is that many do not give enoough consideration to the fact that martial arts become weaponry and many need reminding that the skills are not showy gameplay.

Some of my male cousins were in martial arts as kids and it really helped them get some of their emotions and energy out in a positive way. I don't have kids yet but if I were to have a high energy child i'd definitely try to get them to give it a try.
