I have never been a big fan of math. I never totally stunk at it but I never enjoyed doing it. Even know, as I am pursuing my BA in college one of the things I take into consideration is what major won’t require me to take more math courses. I haven’t done math since the mid-80s. Back then we were always expected to show our work, which was always supposed to show how we got to our answer. Concepts were pretty clear, even if you didn’t understand them. Nowadays they’re introducing something called Common Core in many schools. I’ll be honest. My own children aren’t learning using that method, so I know very little about it. Basically, my limited understanding of it is what I’ve heard from acquaintances who have children learning it. I have always thought that there is value in things that encourage skills mastery, and that includes many apps. Recently I learned about Splash math, which is a math skills practice app aligned to Common Core standards. They are known for their apps, which are used by more than 4 Million kids, mostly homeschoolers on iPads and iPods. They recently launched SplashMath.com in an effort to bring the same fun math practice with interactive questions on iPads to the personal computer.

I was curious about Splash Math, so I took a little test drive of the Splash Math – Grades 1 to 5 app, which gives children access to math skills used in grade levels 1 through 5.

The first thing you do after creating an account is to add your child.

After you add your child you can see their account login information.

I continued on to test the app myself.

The basic free account provides free access to 20 questions per day.

Once in the account you can browse the area you want to focus your attention on. (click to enlarge.)

Practice questions seemed straightforward to me, and were presented in a variety of ways using different colors and models.

Basically the child is presented with a question.

The child selects what the answer is.

If the child’s answer is correct they receive words of encouragement. If their answer is incorrect they are gently informed so.

Once the limit of 20 daily practice questions has been reached you can either stop or purchase access to the full grade level for unlimited access.

Splash Math – Grades 1 to 5 gives children access to grades levels 1 through 5 in one iPad app that syncs with its website.  Splash Math is priced $9.99 for one grade level and $29.99 for all five grade levels.
