There’s a reason you see more recipes for simple meals then desserts. The reason is this. Baking from scratch is not my strong suit. Nine times out of ten I will use a boxed cake mix because it’s simple. No, it doesn’t usually have that “bakery” flavor, but it works. We have a lot of great bakeries here in New Jersey. We even have one about an hour away that’s really well-known, as it’s the home of the Cake Boss Buddy Valestro. But I’m not driving an hour for a cake. Fortunately, if I am in the mood for that rich flavor but don’t want to make the drive, I can have it. With the introduction of Cake Boss cake mixes and frostings I am now able to easily make a cake right at home that has that “cake shop” flavor.
Cake Boss Cake Mixes are available in six delicious flavors:
- Decadent Devil’s Food – Indulgent, satisfying and sinfully delicious
- Divine White – Exquisitely moist, rich and flavorful
- Chocolate Trifecta – Deliciously moist with three kinds of chocolate
- Primo Yellow – Moist, flavorful and simply delicious
- It’s Your Party – Fun, festive and full of flavorful confetti
- Va Va Velvet – Moist, delicious and smooth red velvet
There are also four Cake Boss Frostings available.
- Whole Lotta Chocolate – Two kinds of chocolate for double the decadence.
- Creme De La Cream Cheese – Rich, creamy and scrumptiously sweet
- Mega Milk Chocolate – Thick, rich and milk-chocolatey delicious
- Viva Vanilla – Sweet and creamy with real vanilla

I started with the Chocolate Trifecta cake. Each box of cake mix comes with the cake mix itself and a package of bakery creme. I don’t know exactly how to describe the creme but it sort of reminded me of custard pudding, it is very smooth and rich. The cake was easy to make. Add water, oil and eggs and bake. The creme helps keep the cake very soft and moist. Yes I certainly did lick the spoon, and the batter was very tasty! The cake took about 18 minutes to bake. To check it I just stuck a toothpick in it. I made a rectangular cake. Unfortunately, the cake broke when I was transferring it from pan to platter. No worries, I grabbed the Cake Boss Viva Vanilla frosting and covered up the giant crevice in my cake. The frostings were rich and of great quality. I was pleased to find that they didn’t taste super gritty or grainy like some premade frostings. The whole cake was moist and tasty, and yes, it did taste more like it had come from a bakery then it had from a box.
I’m going to be making a cake for Christmas, I think I’m going with the Va Va Velvet cake with the Creme De La Cream Cheese frosting. Or, actually, I think I’m going to skip the frosting and go with fondant. (Be sure to check back for that.)

Tough choice and some variety of chocolate ideally with a whipped cream topping.
