MY THOUGHTS
I received a copy of the Disney Mulan15th Anniversary Edition And Mulan II Blu-ray Combo Pack. I’d not seen it before so I was really looking forward to watching it. I was not disappointed at all, I was actually quite delighted. Mulan has a great positive message for not only girls, but children in general. Eddie Murphy is the voice of the dragon Mushu, who’s a great comedic sidekick and quite funny. Once I saw the movie I understood the pride and affection that the Bancroft Brothers had for this movie. (They were animators on the movie, check back for a post containing my interview with them coming soon.)
Mulan is the story of a young girl, an only child. At her age she is expected to behave in a certain way, and bring honor upon her family by becoming a wife. She is not thrilled about this, she’s still having fun with her life and is not the most ladylike of girls. Her interview to be considered to be a wife goes badly and brings shame upon her family.
At about this time the Huns are invading and China is going to war. A decree is issued that each family must send one male to battle. Her father, already living with an injury from a previous war, must go to fight. She is concerned for him and tries to stop him from going. Once again he says that she has shamed the family. She sees her father getting ready to leave for battle and knows he will not be able to physically handle it. In the middle of the night she takes his armor and goes off to serve in his place. She must remain disguised as a man, because women do not have a place in the military. The whole group of men, including Milan who is going by the name of Ping, are pretty sorry soldiers. Captain Shang is a rather arrogant commander and struggles to get everyone trained for the impending battle. Mulan gets very determined and succeeds in completing a task none of the other men could, earning some respect from the Captain and the other men. The group faes the Huns, and thanks to Mulan’s quick thinking the group outwits the Huns. In the process, Mulan is injured. While having her wounds tended to it comes out that she is a girl. Once again she is considered a disgrace.
Feeling lonely once again, Mulan discovers that the Huns are not in fact dead, they are very much alive and making their way to the city to kill the Emperor. Captain Shang doesn’t believe her, so she goes to the city and takes matters into her own hands. Will the city and the Emperor be saved? Will Milan’s honor be bestowed? You’ll have to watch for yourself to find out.

I haven’t had a chance to watch Mulan II yet, I’m looking forward to it and will hopefully get to watch it this weekend. From the looks of this clip I won’t be disappointed.
