About the Author
Scary School promises to be one of the funniest, most original, and delightfully scary children’s books of the year. No wonder that Derek T. Kent’s personal and professional background is one of a creative chameleon. Son of Melanie Taylor Kent, a world-renowned artist and Los Angeles icon, Derek started writing children’s books at the age of 15. His first published book, Rudy the Beast, has recently been optioned by film producer Colin Callendar. Derek’s book Michael Jordan’s Magic Shoes turned into a one-man-show which Derek wrote and performed at the UCLA Theater Program before taking it across theatres in America. Several more award-winning children’s plays followed with sold-out runs. Derek also runs the L.A. film production company, Sad Ninja Comedy. His short film Rock Obama: The Barack Obama Musical became a hit at film festivals and was featured in a documentary film about the 2008 election. In his spare time, Derek teaches Children’s Writing and Young Adult writing for The Los Angeles Writing Pad.
MY THOUGHTS
I received a copy of Scary School. While the book is written for middle school students, it could also be enjoyed by advanced younger readers and some adults as well. It’s a light read that pre-teens and teens won’t want to put down. The story isn’t scary like a horror, it’s more creepy. But not so creepy that is isn’t funny. I know that when in middle school my son was often interested in creepy things, they interested him. I love the idea of a story line that interests pre-teens and teens and gets them into reading, reading is so important and can be so enjoyable. This book is the perfect book to keep kids reading over summer vacation.
