We always have lunchmeat, or what I call cold cuts, in our house. We’re a busy family and there are times when we’re not all together for a meal, or other times that one person doesn’t happen to want or like what I’m serving. Plus, hubby brings sandwiches with him to work as he doesn’t have access to a kitchen so he can’t bring hot or cold foods. So, every week we buy cold cuts. Generally I get my cold cuts at a deli but from time to time I do find reason to buy packaged cold cuts.
Over the past week I found myself in my favorite store, Walmart.

Super Walmarts are my favorite because they have the Market, or grocery, section.

Unfortunately, I don’t usually get to the Super Walmart very often because we don’t have one in our town. I still don’t have clearance to drive after my surgery so my Mom has been nice enough to occasionally drive me places, take me to the doctor or take me out to do an errand. Fortunately for me, during the course of our travels we found ourselves right near a Super Walmart. I feel like I’m imposing when I ask people to take me places, so I decided to get as much of my shopping done while at the Super Walmart as possible, including some food and cold cuts. We were in a bit of hurry since I was in pain so rather than wait on line at the deli I decided to grab some packaged cold cuts.
We’re rather predictable in my house when it comes to cold cuts. I buy what I know they like and eat because that way I know it doesn’t go to waste. We almost always have ham and turkey. Sometimes we have chicken, roast beef and bologna. We prefer a thin (not too thin so it’s shredded) to medium slice of meat and cheese. Only in the last year or so have packaged cold cuts started becoming available in a thinner slice that is closer to what you’d get from a deli. When it comes to packaged cold cuts we don’t frequently try new things, because if we don’t like them we’d end up throwing a whole container away and I don’t like the idea of wasting like that. The only time we try new cold cuts is if I’m buying at the deli counter, because they allow sampling of a slice.
The Super Walmart has a much larger packaged cold cut section than the regular Walmart near my house, it’s HUGE in fact. Check out all of the different things that they had.

While checking out the selection I found a cold cut I’d never heard of before. Liver Cheese.

Don’t know what Liver Cheese is and don’t foresee anyone here wanting to eat it.
Then I found something I would be interested in trying. Garlic Bologna.

I like garlic and I like some bolognas so this might be something I’d like. It would depend on how strong the garlic was and how the bologna tasted. Generally we get beef bologna so I don’t know.
More than half of our family likes cheese on their sandwiches, so I stopped in the cheese area as well.

They had a decent selection of cheese. I generally buy sliced yellow American cheese at the deli as that is our favorite but I did see a cheeses that isn’t available at the deli – Cheddar Mozzarella. I also got some Colby Jack while I was there because I really like that, especially with turkey or roast beef. Cold cuts are such a popular on the go meal, as well as a quick and convenient meal option, so I imagine there are people that just run into the store just for cold cuts. The packaged cheese section is down near the end of the store, in the aisles with refrigerators and freezers. It would be really nice if the deli meat area was closer to the packaged cheese area, since so many people like cheese on their sandwiches.
As we eat a lot of sandwiches, that also means we go through a good two loaves of bread per week. TJ and I love potato bread. RB prefers rye and wraps, or the flat or thin pocket types of breads.

Did you know that Walmart carries almost as many types of bread as the grocery store?
All in all the Walmart selection of packaged cold cuts and other sandwich products is large. I didn’t notice anything that they didn’t have that the grocery stores have. In most cases the pricing was the same or a little less than the grocery store. The shopping trip was uneventful and we were in and out in under 20 minutes.
By the time I got home it was almost 7 pm. TJ had had football practice so RB had been doing his share of running around too. We were all tired and it was too late and too hot to cook. I invited my parents to join us and we used some of the cold cuts I’d just bought and made it “Sandwich Night”.

My Dad eats things like ham and roast beef with pickles.

RB went with ham and cheese with mayo. He made sure to add his favorite salad veggie – onions.

I has Turkey And Cheese with mayo. I forgot tomatoes.

Do you buy packaged lunchmeat? I’d love to hear your thoughts on packaged lunchmeat and why you like or don’t like it. And if you’re up to it, what’s your favorite sandwich?

I always buy Pepperidge Farm bread with my cold cuts. I think the quality and taste is better than other brands.

We, in our family, do buy lunch meat, but only when the price is right. I like to buy a more premium lunch meat. We will buy bologna every now and then, but not too often. I like it when Vons has their Primo Taglio meats and cheeses on sale for $5 a pound on some of their $5 Friday sales (not this week).
What I don't like is the sodium content in the lunch meats. I think it is a bit much.
As for cheese. I think that most of the prepackaged cheese that is sliced for you is overpriced. Sargento can get quite expensive. I prefer buying my cheese by the blocks and slicing in ourselves.

Although I prefer freshly sliced coldcuts, I buy some packages when the price is right. On my last trip with you I bought three--a lot for mainly hubby as bread and I usually cannot agree.
The livercheese looks like wurst surrounded by American cheese perhaps. Loved garlic baloney (but not human variety) pre bariatric.

We purchase a lot of lunchmeat also. We have 4 generations living together and everyone is just not always up to a large meal at the same time so we eat a lot of sandwichs and salads. I'm with RB also, yummy onions for me please.

Yep, we buy package meat each week, I find more varieties and deal at our Super Wal-mart then the deli in the grocery story in town. Ham and Cheese, Turkey, chicken and beef are everyone's favorite. I used to just buy bologna, and now we can't get them to eat it. RB has to be sandwich master, I am with him on adding my favorite veggie the onion! If you want to spice it up, try the Spicy Mayo, it has a good kick to it for the sandwiches.
